Hi all! Newbie to this site. My brother & my partner & I are looking for a place to live near Phuket with our 93yr old mum w Alzheimer's. Mum is like the energizer bunny; she needs to walk & swim & be active. She needs to do all this accompanied by kind people who like her. She's spent her working life as an anthropologist in the bush, & she's a smart fun woman. But she's lost & sad when left alone now. All four of us do better in tropical heat, so we're hoping the Phuket area will be a good fit. We're a bit wimpy when it comes to bad air, city pollution, pesticides -- I know that will complicate our housing search.

I'm hoping that some of you experienced Thailand dwellers can clue me in to green/organic/healthy resources. Thank you and looking forward to meeting you!

@wilwin58 my brother and I had the same plan because Thailand has some of the most beautiful retirement communities in the world--they look like four star, five star hotels.

I understand you guys want to live with your mom, but if it ever got too much, you could do that and live near her.

Unfortunately my mother's dementia just got too bad, and she wasn't the easiest to deal with, and then she died before we could pull it off.

We were trying for the Chang Mai area in the mountains because as much as my mother loved the beach, I think the heat would have upset her.

But we went through everything you have to go through to bring someone who needs geriatric care, both legally and medically.

I am a lawyer here in Thailand, and I could probably give you guys some advice. You can call me at 20-427-149 or email me at jgm.eh.vte@gmail.com.

Best of luck! I think it's a great idea...

Hello. You said you didn’t like smog much but Chiang Mai has 4 months of bad smog every year. Many of the expats during that time go elsewhere. Phuket is full of tourists all the time. I would recommend Chiang Mai except for those 4 months you could find a place to rent with a pool & beach access in Hua Hin. Good Luck to you.

IMO stay home and look after your Mum - you are looking at a 'pipe dream' - do not go down there.

Yes there are retirement places for old people with dementia in Thailand.

Yes it would be great if you could get her there quickly and easily - but that is very unlikely.

There are so many problems and issues to overcome - and so many things that can and will go wrong.

She is 90+ and that is far too late for all that IMO - enjoy what time you have with her now.

If you are coming to Phuket for an extended stay I recommend

getting your International drivers permit before coming. Should

get for both car and motorbike. I don't imagine your Mom will

be on the back of your scooter or tooling around on the scooter

herself1f60a.svg so a car will be needed.

I should add that there are places you can stay that you don't

need personal transportation since they are close to shops,

restaurants etc but it will limit your activity.

Right now is the high season and the traffic is insane. It's best

or easiest getting around on a scooter.

I assume this is in the Nai Yang area and that would be much

quieter than in Patong where I am. Nai Yang also has the Airport

Phuket Villa that are relatively inexpensive housing. You can get a

2 bedsrm 2 bath for about 2.1M Baht. I don't know if that is available

to foreigners such as Foreign Freehold. Buying property here is a

whole other conversation.

I believe you said they will be 4 of you coming so you will likely

need something bigger. Not sure what your plans for living

arrangements are or if you plan to rent or buy.

Your mother is 93? Not sure how she will adjust to a complete

change of lifestyle or where you are traveling from. My mother

is 93 and she is done with traveling.
