Residency Renewal 2023

Post new topic

Stacy ST

I’ve been reading past forums on residency renewal but they are all over 2 years old (pre-pandemic). Has anything changed in the last 2 years? Does the process still start online? Should I start it at least 2 months before expiration? Any insight or advice on going from temp to perm faster? I plan on living her indefinitely, so was hoping to skip the renewal every year for the next 4 years to make it easier. I don’t think I can get citizenship because my country (USA) frowns on that.

Hello Stacy ST,

Thank you for asking this question.

I am sure you will get some insights very quickly as the members of this forum are very responsive! 1f609.svg

@Stacy ST What do you mean about the US and dual citizenship? My plan is to get Dominican citizenship while maintaining my US Citizenship. I’ve never seen or heard anything to indicate the US has a problem with that.

Nothing has changed honey. The process is the same.

USA does not frown on dual citizenship. Millions have dual citizenship.

There are two ways to get to citizenship faster but not permanent residency.

@ddmcghee My husband is Dominican and he got his US Citizenship through his green-card and when he obtained the citizenship, there was a statement on the documents that said he had to be willing to give up his current citizenship...that's why we thought it was frowned upon.  I know there are a ton of Canadian/USA dual citizens, but was just curious if anyone was USA/DR dual citizens and if there were any issues with that.

I would say that " there was a statement on the documents that said he had to be willing to give up his current citizenship" and having to give up your current citizenship are very different statements.

It's open for interpretation and that makes me nervous.  It doesn't mean that you will have to do it though.

@Stacy ST - He should consult with the Dominican Embassy in the U.S. Are you still living in the U.S. or you've already made the move?

He is not required to give up his DR citizenship by obtaining U.S. citizenship. As DominicadaMike said, it says "willing".

My husband was born in the DR and then became a U.S. citizen as well. He went back to the DR years ago and got his cedula (if your husband still has his, make sure he keeps it up-to-date/renewed) and he will get his Dominican passport again before we make the permanent move to the DR. The Embassy will give your husband all the information he needs. The DR recognizes dual citizenship and he will not have to give up his U.S. citizenship.

And, through marriage, you can get Dominican citizenship as well.

I meant to add that it is, for some strange reason, very difficult to find the information needed online for both yourself, and for your husband who left and became a U.S. citizen. That's why I suggest speaking with the Embassy. I tried to figure it out on my own for months (maybe even a few years), and finally just called the Embassy. They were wonderful. I should have done that to begin with.

Thanks everyone, let's get back on topic.

Hello everyone,

HAs anyone renewed their residency in Punta Cana?  If so, could you please tell me (us) how you are supposed to "specify" Punta Cana vs Headquarters?

My experience: I completed the application as normal, selecting the Bavaro office which I could not see any difference in the process at all.  I have now received my appointment but the location is Headquarters (Santo Domingo).  I wanted to be sure before accepting that I was going to be able to go to Punta Cana so I went to the PC office and asked.  Their response was: yes, everything is the same except when you go to your appointment come here instead of going there...bewildered and of course hestitant...nothing unusual for DR but...

Can anybody add or confirm...

Thanks,
