Traveling with pets from DR to US

Hi, I am hoping for updated information on traveling with pets.  I am in the DR and want to travel back with a cat that I am rescuing.  I also have a dog that I want to be able to bring to the DR and take back home to US with me as we travel back and forth.  Does anyone know the rules.  I am getting such mixed messages.  This is what I THINK.

  • I need his shots, him chipped, and medical paperwork (proof of no rabies).
  • He needs to be 4 or 6 months old (mixed messages)
  • I have to pay the airline fee to travel with him.

When I land in the US:

  • I have global reentry, but will have to go through customs.
  • At customs they will quarantine the cat (some said yes, some said no)

Any information would be appreciated.

Google ---lots of info.... not encouraging

Sadly the U.S. has banned the import of dogs to the United States from 113 countries, including the Dominican Republic. The only way to adopt a dog is to go through a long and expensive process including blood tests and other requirements. At this point we are unable to pursue sending dogs to the U.S.

You might get away with it by claiming you owned the dog already...... from the US

Along with WilleWeb's post, here is the current CDC ruling:https://www.cdc.gov/importation/bringing-an-animal-into-the-united-states/apply-dog-import-permit.htmlInteresting fact:  There are no current bans flying into Canada.

@tpondo97 Thank you for the information.  Currently the link is under review so I can't see it, but I will  look based on title.

I understand why the US is trying to protect against rabies, but my gosh, they sure make it difficult.  My little sheltered dog is of low risk contracting rabies because he seldom alone and doesn't even like other dogs.  The cat is a kitten who is stray on my property in DR.  I feel so sad leaving him to fend for himself so little.

There is soooo much information and so many possible ways for things to go side-ways.  My brain is too full of information right now.

Contact the animal pet shop clinic, they help prepare dogs for travel and can guide you on the process  - they are an excelente resource, here is their number +1 (829) 757-8009

I would highly recommend contacting the CDC directly and get the information from them. You cannot always go by the information that is provided here in the country because it may not be up to date. There are specific requirements and a friend of mine recently had a problem so it is best suggested to contact the CDC for the most up-to-date information. Also keep in mind that you have to follow the travel restrictions by the airline. Generally there are no animals which can fly in the belly of the plane between May and October 31st due to heat restrictions but they can go as carry on if it is permissible by the airline and they are small enough.

Well not sure whats current post covid but before we had paperwork filled out in advance by DR vet then our dogs flew to us and nothing special was done after we got back.

We had originally brought them down and had filled out the vet papers from here and then there was no trouble arriving there…We did have to get a paper stamped by the state agri to go down though..

we did this a couple of times over last several years.

Best bet is ask local vet either here or there depending where your starting point is. They SHOULD be able to tell you the current rules because thats part of what they do especially there.
