Social Security Number - Who applies for it, employer or me?

Hi all, my situation is:

  • I have a NIE
  • I have a job offer in Spain (transferring within the same company from UK to Spain)
  • I still live in the UK
  • I have a EU passport

I don't yet have:

  • Flat/address/padron in Spain
  • Spanish Social Security number

I need a Social Security number to get my new job contract. SHould it be me applying for it, and can I even do it without yet having an address in Spain?

I did some research and it sounds like the employer should be able to request it for me? ("El empresario, deberá solicitar el Número de Seguridad Social de la persona que va a contratar si éste no lo tuviese.", from https://www.seg-social.es/wps/portal/ws … 3384/44147 ) - is that correct?

Many thanks

Alex

You've got an EU passport, so you're entitled ("Free Movement") to relocate to Spain and work.

So I suggest you make the move, and go find yourself a fancy place to live near your new office. :-)

I believe social security number can be obtained by your employer, or by you. But if you want to ask for it, it probably needs to be in person (i.e. not while you're still chillaxing in Dear Old Blighty).

Padron is the certificate issued by your local town hall. You need a rental contract (or own a property) to get one. The padron is the equivalent of the German Anmeldung.

One you get to Spain, go do your EU Citizen Registration. The process is described here:

https://extranjeros.inclusion.gob.es/es/InformacionInteres/InformacionProcedimientos/CiudadanosComunitarios/hoja101/index.html

You'll need to provide your employment contract to prove that you are a "trabajador por cuenta ajena".

"If you are an employee, you may provide any of the following documents:

- Employer hiring statement or employment certificate, including, at least, the name and address of the company, tax identification and contribution account code.

- Employment contract registered with the Public Employment Service, or communication of the contract and its conditions through the CONTRAT@ platform.

- Registration document or situation assimilated to registration in the corresponding Social Security regime or consent to verify the data in the files of the General Treasury of the Social Security."

I don't think padron or other proof of address is needed, but you can check the requirements listed above.

You apply for an appointment online, at your local (to your new job/apartment) immigration office. Then go there with required documentation. They will (should) give you a little registration certificate, which helps with all manner of subsequent bureaucracy. :-)
