Do I need to register my marriage in Brazil to get my CRNM?

My Brazilian spouse and I got married in Canada. When I applied for my VITEM XI, the consulate only asked for my Canadian marriage certificate to be legalized, and all they did was affix a sticker on the back.

When I register in Brazil, do I just use the legalized marriage certificate plus a sworn translation, or do we have to formally register our marriage in Brazil first?

I'm surprised that the Consulate didn't ask you to register your marriage with them and give you a Certidão Consular to register at a cartório when you got to Brazil, but since they didn't, and they issued you your VITEM XI, it sounds like you're in the clear. You might as well apply for your CRNM with your legalized Canadian certificate and the Sworn Translation.   If the Polícia Federal want you to have a Brazilian marriage certificate, they'll ask you to get one.  It's easy enough to do.

You may want to do it anyway, since you'll have to prove your married status from time to time, and it can be convenient to  have a local document on file outside your home.  If you decide to do that, you -- actually, your Brazilian spouse -- will just need to take your legalized Canadian Marriage Certificate with the Sworn Translation to the Cartório do 1o Ofício, and request a "Traslado do Casamento".  You'll be able to pick it up at the cartório in 5 - 10 business days.
