Congratulations!  In general, you'll need to have the following documents, with apostilles (unless otherwise indicated below; obtained in your country) and Sworn Translations (which can be obtained in Brazil):

  • your birth certificate
  • a certification of your marital status.  If your government does not issue a document like this, you may be able to submit a sworn statement of your marital status to the cartório, if you're single.
  • an authenticated copy of your passport, at least the identification page and the page showing your date of entry to Brazil.  This copy can generally be made at the cartório, and should not require an apostille.

If you're divorced, you'll need in addition:

  • An apostilled copy of your divorce decree(s)
  • An apostilled copy of your original marriage certificate(s)

If you're a widow/widower, you'll need in addition:

  • An apostilled copy of your late spouse's Death Certificate(s)
  • An apostilled copy of your original marriage certificate(s)

These are general requirements.  Every cartório is different, so your fiancé(e) should go to the cartório and ask exactly what they will need to see.  The list from the page above can be shown to them.

You need to be married while you're still in Brazil legally, and there is generally a delay of up to thirty days between requesting the marriage license and being able to celebrate the marriage.  So if you're coming on a tourist visa, try to start the process as soon as possible after your arrival and watch your days.  If your visa expires before the wedding takes place the cartório may refuse to marry you, and if they do marry you, the Federal Police may give you problems with your application for residency.
