Make bed higher

I haven't bought a bed in decades but now have to buy one. Looking around at iron bed frames in VN on the net, I see that there aren't any that are higher than 12 inches. Some wood frames are higher but I prefer an iron frame for portability.  I plan to put a foam mattress on it, but I want the bed height higher.

Researching this, I find there is something called Bed Risers that you can put under the legs of the bed. But are these available in Vietnam? Other than that, I guess putting blocks of wood under the legs would work, but wouldn't look so good and legs might slip off.

What about buying two foam mattresses and putting them on top of each other?

Any other solutions?

Okay, I see you can get bed risers on Shopee but they all ship from abroad, so probably a long wait for them. I wonder if anyone sells them locally.

The beds seem ridiculously low here.

My solution was to buy 6 cinder blocks (4 corners and two centre support) and paint them black. Much more stable than many of those piddly bed-risers.

Naw, not long at all. 12 days average for "Ships from overseas" items on Lazada for me.

ChoculaD

and what if the round holes in the bed riser don't fit the legs (often square or rectangular) of the bed?

I'm pretty sure that, with a little searching, you can find a Vietnamese person who will custom make these for you to fit the bed you get.

Or you could follow the advice of Lucille Ball and lower the floor...

My advice to you is to not spend money or waste your time on those bed-risers. I've seen plenty of tipping accidents over the years with those things where they were installed to aid people with mobility issues.

As OB said, find a local to customize the bed, raising it to the height you want, or use something more substantial/sturdy under the legs and centre supports.

Yeah, but cinder blocks will scratch the floor, then they'll take the damage out of my security deposit.

Communicating with the local is the problem. Maybe the shop where I buy the bed frame will be able to make risers, or refer me to someone who will make them. Alternatively, maybe buy a cheap, hard foam mattress and stack it under the good foam mattress?

So you work backwards. You locate a really heavy duty industrial rubber furniture pad that will sit on the floor and protect it and is big enough to handle the riser or whatever they construct to raise your bed.

I have no doubt you can make this work if you maybe do a YouTube search of what other people have done

ChoculaD

Thanks OB. Problem is I'm moving in in 2 days, and have to buy everything: bed, fridge, washing machine, water heater, fans, tables, chairs...it's a lot of research to do. But priority to the fridge and the bed, which I need immediately. The other stuff can wait a few days.

ChoculaD

And sheets! Pillow cases! Mattress pad! It's been 40 years since I had to buy stuff like that and I have no idea how much they cost here or what shop sells it for best price.

ChoculaD

And a step ladder...is there a Home Depot type store in HCM?

Put fabric under them.

Go to the nearest Big-C shopping mall. Look for "Big-C Super Centre", or some such. It may not be the cheapest you could find, but I'd almost guarantee that you really wouldn't be happy with the cheapest you could find.

None of what you listed will you find to be expensive, relative to the west.

A longggg time ago a member on the forum suggested something which works very well for me, then and now.

Download a picture of the item you are hunting for and show people. Wi-fi can be iffy, depending on your location, so best to download the pics on to your phone before heading out.

You obviously never went through a hippie phase...

You have two choices:

1. get the mattress throw it on the floor and sleep on it until I can't stand the fact that there aren't sheets and a mattress covering it.

then go shopping for whatever bed you want or arrange to have one made for you and then once you have that you can arrange for whatever extra support it needs.

once you've lined up whatever method you're going to use to jack the bed up off the floor further, you should be done.

Or,

2. Get a wife

@OceanBeach92107 Mega Market has good selection of sheets and pillows at good prices? Thanks for the info, OB. I also need a lightweight blanket.

ChoculaD

@OceanBeach92107 Yep, I figured those were my choices. Wife unfortunately can't be acquired in next 2 days...thanks.

Glad to see OB making light & fun of this post, because its a joke. So a grown man or woman cant figure out how or where to buy a bed & bed cloths here in HCMC without asking on a forum?1f602.svgHCMC is crammed full of independent bed selling shops & shops that sell blankets etc & so doe all the big Malls including AEON.

Fred

I'm into the mattress on the floor thing.

If I ever wanted anything special, I would go to a welder and have it made.
