Why did you move to Mali? How is life there?

This is actually our third time in Mali. We came first in 1999 to do a pilot study for my PhD, then again in 2000-2001. I got my PhD in 2003 and we returned here in 2004. I'm researching language use in school classrooms.

On the whole I enjoy life here. The people are great and I like the food. Good start. One thing I don't like is the constant noise - people mainly live outside their houses and have televisions in court yards or on the street. It continues until the early hours of the morning. The mosques are not so bad although there is one guy who seems to set his alarm clock earlier than everyone else and starts up about 3.30 am! The rest start at 4.30. At the moment we have a lot of weddings going on - Thursdays and Saturdays as Ramadan starts later this month and people can't get married then. The parties are sometime loud and go on all night.
