Hello everyone and hope you are well.

I would like to introduce to you our new free expression thread: The Expat Lounge for the Netherlands forum.

Here you can talk about everything you want.

Talk about your passion (sport, movies, arts, dancing, etc…), what happens in your daily life or serious topics that matter to you.
(If you publish many off-topics on the forum, this thread is yours too ;) ).

This space is also a good way to exchange ideas and to meet members in a welcoming and respectful environment. We encourage members to share their views constructively, to be open-minded and to respect the opinion of others.

I take this opportunity to share with you a part of our General Conditions of Use (you can find it here) about what we refuse on the forum for example:

Defamation, abusive, harassing, threatening, hate, or discriminatory statements, or anti-human rights propaganda, such as homophobic or racist comments.

Any unlawful or inappropriate material or information, including but not limited to violent, nude, partially nude, hateful, pornographic, including child pornographic materials or any other photos which are otherwise unlawful via the service.

To conclude, talk about everything you want and be respectful with members and of the established rules on the Netherlands forum.

Your turn now :)

What did everyone do over the holiday? I'm not particularly religious and I'm still fairly new to the Netherlands, so I've been trying to travel when I can on the weekends. I tell myself its so I can practice my almost-nonexistent Dutch, but I still didn't really speak any.

The NL train system has a deal where you get 40% off domestic train tix during off-peak times (including weekends and holidays) for 5 euro a month, so I've been trying to do at least a day trip to another part of the country most weekends.

I've been meaning to go back to Dusseldorf again (a few hours from Amsterdam) and has a sizable Japantown close to the train station. I had some good tonkatsu last time I was down there, but there's several JP grocery stores and manga shops that are closed Sundays and holidays. Since Germany more or less closes for the Easter weekend, this weekend wasn't a good choice for that. There's a Japan Day coming up there (I won't be able to attend).

I ended up going to a live music venue (the Metropool) out in Hengelo for a folk music festival. For a town of that size, it's an amazing venue. Hengelo itself and Eschende are cool little towns. I'm hoping next weekend I can go to Rotterdam, where I haven't been yet.
