Expired Permesso di Soggiorno

I applied for the permesso renewal in June 2022, I think it was only good for 6 months. It still was not ready to be picked up in December 2022 (when it supposedly expired). I had to go back to the US, because my employer couldn’t justify giving a paycheck when my pds was potentially expired.

I just received a text (April 2023) saying its ready to be picked up. I don’t know why they offer a 6 month pds when it takes 10 months to get it. Would they go through the effort of printing an expired pds?

I’ve tried calling and emailing asking if it is expired or not. But of course, no answer.

I’m going to Sicily in June, but the questura with my pds is in Salerno. Would it be worth taking the trip to see if the pds is expired or not?

Does anyone have experience picking up a pds that is expired?

Have you tried contacting the US Embassy to see if they can help you?

Why do you assume that the new PDS is already expired?  Just because you applied in June 22 does not mean it would have been issued in June.  It may have been just issued this month, hence the notification mail that it is ready.  Try contacting them again.

I am assuming its only valid for 6 months because the original pds was 6 months. I applied for the initial pds in June, I received it at the end of May and it expired in June. So I only had a valid pds for a few weeks. That’s why I applied for the renewal in June.
