Hi all

I came to Brazil in June 2021 on a 90 day tourist visa - then extended it for a further 90 days.  I am from the UK.

I stayed in Brazil and received my family reunion visa for 1 year based on my husband's investment visa.

This expired in October 2022.  We have been working to renew the visa.

However my father is ill (terminal cancer) and I want to see him in the UK.  I know I will have a 10,000 reis fine but my question is - can I go to the UK for 4 weeks and come back to Brazil, pay the fine and reenter the country on a tourist visa?

I did not overstay a tourist visa - I overstayed a family reunion visa.

Thanks

Wow, great question. I can't wait to see Abthree's reply. I've answered a lot of questions, but not this one, I would only be guessing, something I don't do. will try to find links later.

@rraypo thank you for your response and also thank you for not guessing. Any help is appreciated. We promptly applied for renewal but it has been one nightmare after another. PF told us to stay in Brazil until it is sorted out but I really want to spend some time with my father.

Good afternoon. I'm sorry to hear about your father: I hope that he has a speedy recovery, and that you'll be able to spend time together soon. I think that you probably will. Since your renewal is already in process, that should help.

Monday is a holiday, so I would recommend that you go to the PF office on Tuesday morning with all your renewal paperwork with you; if your Portuguese isn't good enough to handle the discussion, bring a Portuguese speaker to help. Tell them, starting with the person at the Reception Desk, that that you have a family emergency, that your father is very ill, and that you need to go to Britain temporarily to spend some time to help with his care, and that you need to speak with an officer. With the officer, if you have an idea about how long you might be there, that could help. Briefly tell him or her the same story, and that your renewal is currently in process. Be sure to end with the simple question that they have to answer, "what can I do?"

If they're not responsive then you'll need an attorney or a professional agent at that point, but I think that they probably will be responsive. All the best.

Hello just thought I would update on my situation.

I am still here in Brazil - I have paid my overstay fine. It is 25 reals a day for expired family reunion visa.

One PF agent told me that I should have no problems leaving for 30 days and coming back on a tourist visa.

Another agent told me it’s up to the airport staff if they let me do that……….

Thank you for your update. Yes, the agents have a lot of discretion, a common theme in Brazil. Please keep us posted and good luck to you.

Hi @Anon666,   This may be a too late for you to reply, but could you guide on what documentation you needed to renew your residency visa?
