The Roads Into Cuenca Have Been Neglected For Far Too Long

Post new topic

A "Great Road March" was staged in Cuenca on Thursday.

An estimated 3,000 people participated in the protest

against the neglect of road maintenance that has

clearly had negative impact on tourism in Cuenca and

the city's hotel and restaurant business.

One hundred trucks, buses and taxis blocked

Avenida Solano and streets in El Centro in the protest.

Cuenca HighLife quoted a march leader as saying,

"Why do other cities and provinces have good streets

and highways while ours deteriorate and are subject

to incessant landslides, ground dislocations and

general neglect?  It is time the governmenet

fix the problem."

The head of Cuenca's restaurant and bar association

said the Easter holiday period was a disaster

for the restaurant business.  He noted that the

businesses and workers depend on motorists

getting through to Cuenca on the highways.

The many recent road closures have blocked

potential customers from getting to Ecuador's

third largest city.

Roadblock between Cuenca and Guayaquil.

Four technicians held hostage.

In the usually tourist-friendly town of Molleturo,

residents are so upset by the lack of progress

in maintaining the roads that they have erected

a roadblock disrupting traffic between Cuenca

and Guayaquil.  The residents have been

holding four government technicians hostage

as part of the protest.

There have been rockslides on roads into Cuenca

in recent years .. and the government has

apparently been slow to provide a permanent

solution.  A bypass has been under construction

for about a year.

The head of the Azuay province government was

reported to be en route to Molletero in an effort

to deal with the hostage situation and the

roadblock of the Cajas highway.
