Anyone out there have recent ( in 2023 ) experience bringing dog from U.S.A. to Brasil  ?

American airlines told me I can no longer check my dog in for the same flight as me except for military personnel.

Say I have to go through cargo and broker. My dog will arrive when I do in Miami on Alaska Airlines but to transfer her to American airlines cargo for Brasil I need to go to another building a few kilometers from airport ! Will cost over $1,200. U.S. , with a few fees attached and need a customs broker. What a nightmare ! Can anyone tell me what they did about this ?

I am desperate to figure this out.We left Brasil 8 years ago and now my husband passed away and I want to take his remains to spread down there. I need to go in September. Not taking my dog ( who adopted US  down there ) is not an option.

Thanks for any input/advice you can give me

Mikeflanagan

I had to bring my dog down. was an absolute boondoggle, ultimately due to breed cost me about 7800$ total ( pre pandemic )via a broker to bring him to brasil. then the quarantine timeframe required on entry was a bit moot as well. It wont be cheap if you choose to bring a dog!

Droplover

We flew with our dog early 2021.  We drove to Miami and then we flew Latam to Sao Paulo.  She was in the hold area where they keep the animals.  It only cost a few hundred dolars, I think $300.  It was nerve wracking but everything went very smoothly.  We checked her in with our luggage at the same time.  The Latam staff was extremely accommodating to us.  After we boarded they came to tell us she was on board and that the pilot would leave the light on for her.  At GRU she came out with the oversized luggage.  I also would not have moved here without her. Our dog comes first and then my husband 1f609.svg

cindylido

Sadly that's all changed. Delta now only carries in cabin. No more baggage hold

cindylido

@Mikeflanagan How recent was that ?

can you share name of broker ?

rraypo

In addition, the list of dog breeds Delta simply will refuse to carry continues to grow.

Breed is not an issue. They just only do small dogs in cabin now

sprealestatebroker

i was to suggest to travel by Boat, transatlantic liners.

But at their asking rate....

R$53.499 From Rio to Miami?????

Daaaaammn!!!!

You are better asking for a Kennel or Dog sitter if you are to scatter ashes.

cindylido

@sprealestatebroker well, i didn't feel the need to tell my WHOLE story here but since people just assume things I guess I need to explain some things.

Yes, I am going to take my hubbys remains but I intend to stay awhile as we have a house there that we hadn't been able to return to in too long because of hubbys health issues. A lot of friends will be coming for a Celebration of Life for my hubby. Niether of us are Brasilian but we have been a part of that community since we arrived in 1985 and the town is very sad at his passing. Our dog, Lucy, adopted us whe we were down there the last time and I want to let her enjoy running on the beach again and see  all her Tio's that spoil her. So no kennel or house sitter. I will find a way even if it's more than originally planned.

I am just trying to figure out how to get her down there with me by flying, I am not taking a boat ! Estou na luta !

Droplover

@cindylido Hi Cindy,  Did you check with Latam?  On their website it states dogs can travel in the hold.  There are some restriction regarding weight and size of kennel/ carrier but I see no change since we flew with our dog two years ago.

Droplover

@rraypo Our vet in the USA changed our dog's breed to mixed and the airline staff did not question. Here in Brasil her breed is Pit Bull.  Just saying there may be ways to get around the breed restriction.

cindylido

@Droplover THANKS, I WILL

cindylido

@Droplover Her breed is not an issue. thanks

Mikeflanagan

Cant make recommendations as I dont know if they still exist or not because it was through a friend of a friend. even as rraypo was saying cost and airlines will forever make it a complicated process. and the prices i paid for was in CAD pre pandemic. now with inflation I can just wildly assume that it will be about 30-40% of a price index increase so, you will need to do some specific research here as its not common to bring dogs here, while accepted I think less than 0.2% of annual flights contain dogs so not much in terms of information on people is viable.

Freighter was suggested too, however even with some lines that do that require you to bring enough food to last about 3-6 months worth of travel time. cruise ships are a possible alternate scenario. ultimately if money is no limit you have lots of options

cindylido

thanks

Then you will need to find a commercial carrier that does take your dog, and as such, deal as freight.

Specialized freight. You Passenger carriers will put up all kinds of nonsense policies, and all of suddenm presto! Somewhere, all of the sudden, comes up

with a business to  profiteer at the expense of your animal companion to wring every last cent of your wallet.  New rules, new rackets.

Get the company legal name and fantasy name.  And then plug in on

This is a griping portal, so you will be asked about your CPF ID, only if you are to post a complain.

Again, Google Translate on it.

Watch for recurring pattersn

SAVE EVERYTHING ON A FILE!  THIS IS YOUR HOMEWORK!!! Cover your rear end.  It's your dog and your money, after all.

Then move on to  check the legal complaints on the firm..

you will need their Business Tax ID for that.

If the company has a website that ends with com.br,, then it's a cake walk . If not, you will need to do the workaround to find more about the service provider.

Use this link

plug in the company domain name. Cut off thev http stuff

using this one...

It needs to be entered as

The result will give you a bunch of infornmation.

This is what you need to pull....

IMPORTANT... IF THE BUSINESS COMES UP IN A SEARCH UNDER JUSBRASIL.ORG you will need to pay attention. Those are legal court brieds on lawsuits filed either in their behalf or against them.  PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO IT.

@sprealestatebroker Thanks , lot's of info there but just skimming it quick ,it looks like they are all related to coming to U.S from Brasil. I am coming from U.S  to   Brasil.

I will have to contend with the other direction later but right now I just need to get us down there. Thanks

American Airlines

American Airlines welcomes cats and dogs on flights, but since the COVID-19 pandemic, they aren't allowed to travel as cargo. We recommend checking the policy routinely, as this could change in the future.

Cost per pet: $125

Allowed in Cabin: Yes

Allowed in Cargo: No

Size Restrictions:

All carriers: (19”x 13” x 9”)

Traveling with a cat or dog will cost you $125 per pet carrier on domestic flights; international flights are $200 each way. Again, due to COVID-19, the airline may only allow pets that reside within the US.

Carriers do not count toward your luggage allowance, but they are considered personal items. For lucky first-class passengers, your dog will receive its very own compartment at the head of the aircraft during the takeoff and landing procedures.

However, there is a drawback. American Airlines only allows between five and seven pet carriers on their flights. Make sure you book well in advance, and don't rely on simply showing up at the airport with your pup.

3. Delta Airlines

Delta has long been known for having pet-friendly policies, though unfortunately these have changed somewhat during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dogs were banned from traveling into the US from other countries, so make sure you check the policies ahead of time.

Cost per pet: $75-$200, location dependent

Allowed in Cabin: Yes

Allowed in Cargo: No

Size Restrictions:

All carriers: (21” x 15” x 16”)

To bring your pup aboard a Delta flight, you'll pay around $95 each way. While one of the cheapest options we've seen, this is for domestic flights only. International flights charge $200 each way, and dogs can't fly inside the cabin if traveling to a select list of international countries.

Your pet has to remain in their carrier, even if they're accompanying you in the cabin. You can't use a single carrier for multiple pets in most cases, though two of the same animal may share a carrier if they're between two and six months old. We recommend checking your specific circumstances with Delta ahead of time.

Like some other airlines, Delta classes your pet's carrier as part of your carry-on luggage allowance. Certain rules will also apply to you if you're bringing a dog. For example, you won't be allowed in bulkhead seats, emergency exit seats, and certain other areas of the plane on specific aircraft.

sprealestatebroker

what I gave you from Brazil to overseas is a blue print for pre-evaluation's sake.  A laundry list.

From the US to Brazil, you better carry your airline of choice.

Delta being choice #1, American has always been a problem with cargo.

These airlines allow for in passenger cabin pet carry, mostly on cages.

05/09/23 @cindylido.  It appears that LATAM will still allow dogs to travel in the hold on the same flights as their owners:  https://www.latamairlines.com/us/en/exp … sportation

There's still the matter of getting the dog and owner to the LATAM departure airport.

duzzimenino

I just brought two dogs from LAX to GRU 11/2022. One dog flew Lufthansa Pet Cargo (Boston Terrier) the other dog (small terrier) flew in Cabin Latam. I used a transfer company in LA for Lufthansa ($5000) no issue, and the small dog cost$200. My vet did the small dog into Brazil and the only request customs had in GRU was they wanted to take a picture of the dog with my wife (she's cute--the dog and my wife). The other dog was more complicated because at the time there was no direct route for Lufthansa to Brazil. Had to go through Germany. Again, no issue except my dog got a upper respiratory infection. The only advice I would give is choose a good vet that is FDA certified and if going through multiple countries, has experience with the customs requirements of both. The transfer companies are meh if you have the time contact a good vet and a transfer company in Brazil and work with them. I was more impressed with the Brazilian company that helped with the transfer than the company in LA.

danieldemetris

@cindylido use delta, they will allow a small dog as carry on from states to sao paulo

cindylido

nope, Delta does not take pets in the hold anymore and mine is too big for the cabin

roddiesho

@cindylido SPOILER ALERT: For in depth discussion of this topic, there is an earlier post that goes into great detail.

First, I want to second the comments about it being difficult. This is the MOST difficult thing I have done in my life.

  • Due to health regulations you are not allowed to purchase the pets ticket (cargo) before your departure and you have the signed Health Certificate from your licensed Veterinarian. Your ticket can be purchased whenever, however it is challenging to match flights since the pets ticket is done right before take off.
  • They perform a temperature check the day of travel, so your pet is not in cargo for a destination that is above 85 degrees that day.
  • In fact you actually purchase it the morning of the flight after all documents are reviewed.
  • The crate has to be lined up very specifically. The height and width of the pet etc.  Also American Airliens asked me to change crates at the last minute because dogs of a certain size were not allowed on the flight I was preparing to take, so I had an emergency return with Amazon.com to get a crate one size smaller.

There is way to many things to adhere to (all included in the earlier thread).  One advice I have is ONLY use the broker in Sao Paulo to get through customs. All the paperwork and preparation for your pets travel should be done by you, since the agents will be inspecting your documents and your broker will not be there to answer. ( When I did it it was at 4am.) i did not use a broker in Sao Paulo, but the very, very nice agents who helped me advised one next time. Only someone with experience is going to know what locations you need to visit (and yes there are several) in order to get your pet on the right track.

@cindylido Yay, I solved my problem. THE BACKSTORY....... Since I am traveling on Alaska Airline miles my original booking was from Calif. to Miami with Alaska Airlines and then connecting in Miami with Latam to Sao Paulo. The problem was Latam would not book the space for my dog because the flight started with Alaska Air. And Alaska Air said they could only book the space for their flights. I called all kinds of numbers for LATAM in various cities but they would not do it. Along the way of hassling all that I found out if your flight is on an Airbus , which Latam uses for some flights, they do not have a temperature-controlled area for pets since they are smaller aircraft, so they do not take pets in the hold on these flights. Then I tried the same itinerary using American Airlines to SP and that was a nightmare as they make you send your pet through cargo requiring me landing in Miami , getting my dog and having to go a few miles to ANOTHER building for their cargo, hire a customs broker and all kinds of costly red tape. Delta no longer takes pets in luggage hold, only in cabin with exception for active military. So, back to talking with Alaska Airlines and a wonderful customer service agent who suggested a solution and IT WORKED! It was so easy ,I don't know why no one thought of it before, including me !

So , although it cost me an extra 30,000  miles I was glad to do it. The solution was to ONLY book the portion with Alaska Airlines to Miami and then make a separate ticket with Latam , using Alaska Airline miles and I got her booked on LATAM, FINALLY.

On Alaska my dog costs $100.00 and on Latam $150.00.

I eliminate the stress of landing in one terminal and hurrying to another by spending the night at the Miami International Hotel that is located INSIDE the airport. We stayed there before and is super convenient, takes dogs for +$25.00 and has a 6 p.m. late checkout for +$50.00. Now I just have to figure out another leg of my trip that may need some advice but will post that later. Thanks for all the suggestions which mostly ended up not applying for my trip down but I now  know I may have a nightmare coming back, IF I DO COME BACK !1f601.svg
