Four Ecuadorian press and media organizations are looking for

government support in light of threats from

criminal elements.

Two journalists have recently been forced into exile

and there have been eight assassination attempts in

Ecuador against journalists during a three-month period.

The problem has not reached the same level as in

neighboring Colombia, where hundreds of journalists

have been targeted and killed in recent years, yet it

has been escalating as has violence among

drug-trafficking gangs.

Is the Mafia post a joke?

We don't all know that the Italian Mafia

is behind harassment of journalists or

the murders in Colombia.

I don't see any substantiation of this

allegation.

Major newspaper folds in Quito.

El Comercio (est. 1906) is ceasing publication.

The Spanish-language news outlet has conceded

that the era of the traditional newspaper is ending.

The El Comercio website is still operating

though its days may be numbered.

I first read El Comercio in 1959, when I lived in Quito. Sorry to see it go, it has been a source of news about Quito and Ecuador for over 60 years for me!
