Residence permit EU citizen and insurance

Post new topic

Hi there,

I am Norwegian pensioner who wants to move to Portugal. I fall under the EU citizen requirement, but i am in doubt about the requirement of travel/health insurance. On the SEF site they say: “...covered by health insurance when the same applies to Portuguese citizens in your country of origin”.

I´m wondering if I need an insurance like the AXA Schengen travel insurance or if they would accept a private health insurance with a Portuguese company when i arrive?

Hope someone can help.

Best regards,

Marius

Hi Marius, Welcome.

During your temporary stay, you may have travel insurance that covers hospitalisation and repatriation, and also apply in your country for European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which allow you to receive medical assistance during a temporary stay in EU. And 3 months later, when you become resident in Portugal, you can ask for access to the Portuguese national health service and also have a private insurance in a Portuguese or international insurance company (accepted in Portugal).
