Citizenship my marriage - then what?

Post new topic

sabush79

Hi,

I am applying for Citizenship by marriage.

To plan ahead, what are the steps I need to take afterward?

  1. How do I get my actual Kenya ID vs. Alien ID which I have now?
  2. It sounds like I still have to make a Dual application.
  3. Get a passport if I want.

Anything else?

Thank you, Sarah

Thank you for your services, but until now I managed all paperwork easily on my own and just wanted some input as to what else I should consider vs. full legal advice. thanks!

Sabush;  I assume that you have been married for over three years?

  1. You will apply for a Kenyan ID once you have been granted citizenship.
  2. You don't make a dual application, but you must declare that you have citizenship of another country (if this is permitted by the country from which you originate).  In practice the Kenyan government will already know that you have citizenship of another country and that you do not intend to renounce it.
  3. Usually something is endorsed in your existing passport to the effect that you are dual nationality, but you can have two passports - my wife is dual Kenyan/UK and has a passport for each country.

The process is lengthy - applying for Permanent Residency is cheaper and less complicated.

On the same day I was given my citizenship certificate at Nyayo House, I was taken to apply for a Kenya ID and passport. This all happened at Nyayo House. It didn't take very long. Within a month I had both ID and passport. ID was collected at Nyayo House, the passport at City Square Post Office.

When I obtained my Kenyan citizenship about 3 years ago, part of the process right then was the application for national ID and Kenya passport. The people from the citizenship office walked me through the entire procedure (including photos, etc.,) on the sane day I received my citizenship certificate.
