Remitly in the UK

Post new topic

FindlayMacD

Has anyone on this forum used the remittance company called Remitly in the UK? Up until now I have always used OrbitRemit who only ever serviced Australia, New Zealand and the UK, but some reason they have decided to stop servicing the UK and I've been looking around for another remittance company.

Likewise I am looking for a replacement for OrbitRemit which has served me well for years. Remitly make proud claims but feedback on them is not good. TransferGo looks more reliable but their exchange rates are not so good after initial promo rates end.

Any other recommendations for RELIABLE money transfers UK to Phil please?

Yes, I've signed with Wise, but their transfer fee is higher, £6 compared to OrbitRemit and Remitly which both charge £2. I have sent with OrbitRemit for the last time today because there service in the UK ends on June 30th 2023.

The real money made by the company doing the transfer is the exchange rate, not their fee.

I haven't checked UK, but I use moneygram from Australia. Perhaps also check western union & remitly. Just a suggestion.

@Enzyte Bob How is the money transferred from your bank to Wise, can it be by debit card or only the slow way by bank transfer, I must say that was the biggest drawback with OrbitRemit, they only done bank transfer into their bank account.

My account is set up as a bank to bank transfer (CitiBank Dollar to BDO Peso). For the most part it is accomplished in several minutes.

@Enzyte Bob I have just done my first Wise transfer, just as a test to see how well it works. I only sent £25 because I had already transferred the bulk of my pension for this month with OrbitRemit. The whole process was very easy and seamless and the exchange rate was marginally better than OrbitRemit but Wise is probably slightly more expensive because of the difference in the transfer fee, £6 compared to £2.

How easy is the registration with them. What proofs of ID do they require?

They send you an email with a link to their app which you open on your phone, then within that app you take a photo of your passport, then you take a photo of yourself. If all goes well then that's it, your registered and you can send money.

Thanks for info. Was your transaction bank to bank, debit card or what?

FindlayMacD

@C D87 Debit Card, but I intend to read about the other methods before I do my next transfer, maybe the transfer fee is cheaper.

Enzyte Bob

Today I sent $300 USD via Wise.

39 Cents connection fee to my Citibank account.

2.95 Wise Fee

$3.34 Total Fees

P55.5845 Guarantee Exchange Rate

Looking at the cost of sending larger amounts such as £20,000 (sending from my bank in UK Pounds, into my BDO account in pesos) it seems that the only economical way of sending here to Phils is to open a dollar account with BDO, then send in dollars and then transfer from my dollar account to my peso account.

You can send UK Pounds to Fil Pesos with Wise.

I use a company called "send wave" from the UK to Ph, bank to bank or credit card and the rate is very good. Funny enough no I'd verification or uploading numerous documents and the money was received into Ph bank account less than 4 minutes .

I believe you misunderstood FindlayMacD, what he was saying about documentation is a one time thing when signing up.

For example when I want to send money with Wise, I check into their site online, they interim send me a six digit sms number on my phone to be used to confirm my identity.

Now FindlayMacD mentioned he was thinking of sending 20,000 Pounds. Rather for comparison of rates between "Send Wave" and "Wise, I used 20,000 USD

Send Wave: No Fee?, exchange rate P54.62

Wise: ACH connection fee $25.97

Wise fee $120.29  exchange rate P55.65

-----------------------------------------------

                  Total $146.26

So with Wise paying P1.03 higher more in the exchange rate, that would equal P20,600 more sent.

P20,600 would equal $370.17

Now if there is actually no fee from "Send Wave" and considering Wise fee is $146.26,

FindlayMacD would receive $223.91 better deal.
