working in the netherlands - better to live in B or in NL?

fredo_c

Hello,

I've just contracted a job in the Netherlands.

I'm living in Belgium but I will need anyhow to move closer to the Netherlands'border.

I was wondering iif it would make more sense to set-up in the Netherlands or stay in Belgium

1- from a financial standpoint:

  • income taxes
  • health insurance (I understood I would need to pay a significant amount of money for my 4 kids)
  • rental cost
  • Cost of living

2- from a school perspective - I've 4 kids -only French speaking - where is the education better?

thanks a lot in advance for your input!

Hi, thanks for your post.

I can't really speak a lot about the differences between Belgium and Netherlands, but one thing you are definitely going to want to look at, or ask, with regard to your new employer is if they have any limitations on where you reside when working for them. It's certainly possible that things like tax withholding, health insurance, even transit costs might be different if you are living in a different country.

You'll definitely want to check in on topics like double-taxation, but also whether your company only has discounts on health care for Dutch insurance companies, etc. If your kids are French speaking and don't speak Dutch at all, it's almost certainly going to be an adjustment for them to go to school in NL.
