Hi Everyone,

Andrea from Sydney Australia. Moving to Mallorca in March next year with my partner and our 6yo kid.

I have an Australian and Croatian citizenship which should help as Cro is a part of EU.

Does anyone have any experience in extending their stay to a more permanent situation. We would like to stay for at least 2 years.

Welcome to the Expat.com forum and good luck with your move to Spain!

With Croatian passport it's easy-peasy as you enjoy "Freedom of Movement" within all of the EU. It's a pretty simple process (the "EU Citizen Registration") which you can do in Spain after you move from Australia (instead of in a Spanish Embassy before moving).

The requirements (simplified) are: EU passport, proof of funds, proof of address (in Spain), and proof of health (not travel) insurance.

You will get an "EU Citizen Registration Certificate", which makes you a legal resident of Spain, and is normally valid for 5 years. At the end of 5 years, you should be able to convert to a "Permanent Resident".

If your partner (and/or child) does not have an EU passport (i.e. Australian only, say) then you will need to follow-up (after you have your Certificate) with the "Family Reunification" step. This needs proof of the relationship between you and the applicant. If you are married or in a registered/civil partnership then Reunification is easy. If you are unmarried partners it is possible, but often very tricky (although I suspect much easier as a parent of your child). This will be valid for the same period as your Certificate, so it should be very easy for you all to become PRs in 5 years.
