Evening All,

Another newby moving to Riyadh somewhere off compound around the 10 Sept to teach English at KSU. Lots of great information on here thanks.

Next to a sense of humour, is there anything you wish you had brought with you or prepared in advance?

Also, maybe a silly question but what sports can you get involved in? Any five a side?

Any info much appreciated,

Jason.

Christine

Hi Jason

Welcome to the blog and soon to Riyadh.

There is sport; golf, a Riyadh rugby club (I know of old South african Springbok players are in it including the coach.

Everything is here you need, however, there may be a favourtie food item that you may not find here.

There are no cinemas and of course pub gatherings, so you may miss that.

Salman Omrani

soccer is the number one sport here. if you want to mingle with the locals its perfect.

Captain Jaw Breaker

Hey Jason,

Welcome to the blog and welcome to Saudi Arabia.

Bring lots of books and novels, as it takes time to find a good social group.

There are lots of sports options available, Squash, basketball, tabletennis, soccer, cricket, Tennis, etc. this is the best social time pass available here, as there are no cinemas or clubs here, its a different lifestyle and hope its interesting.

Good Lord I am bored already.  Thank heavens for kindle.

Seem to be getting a few requests to be an English teacher friend.  Please understand, after 6-8 hours of class a day its the last, and I do mean last thing you want to do.

Where is the compound with the nurses on?

When you feel like you're just about to lose your mind trying to adjust I would normally advise a day or 2 in Bahrain.  That being said, it would be a horribly bad idea this weekend.

My wife and I went last week just for a day trip and it was almost like being 'home' again.  From Riyadh you might have to make it an overnighter, but it does wonders to refresh from the boredom here.

Once you get settled and get to know people you will find there is a social life, but its usually friends visiting at each others houses rather than a club/bar etc like we're used to.  Until you find your group though staying sane can be a challenge.

Good luck!
