Elder Care in BG

Does anyone here have any knowledge of elder care provision in Bulgaria? I'm trying to find info (including costs, ideally) for daily care visits, a live-in carer, and care homes.

My pops is 95, but still going strong. I was contemplating relocating him to Plovdiv where I can look after him (with the help mentioned above). I'm a permanent resident so I think family reunification is possible, and he can bring his S1 with him so that he's entitled to Bulgarian healthcare. So some of the logistical issues don't seem so daunting. However, he's increasingly reluctant when we need him to get dressed and get in the car to go to a doctor's appointment in the village... so I'm not sure how keen he'd be if the trip's gonna be some 1,500 miles instead of 2. :-)

Separately, if anyone has ever had to deal with the care of elderly parents I'd welcome your feedback on whether this would be the craziest plan ever, and I should leave him well alone back in the UK! Or if you think a fresh start at 96 will reinvigorate the old boy. :-)

This might be of help?

Thank you for the link, but this is about UK-source benefits - and attendance allowance is teeny-weeny, it doesn't make much of a dent in the real cost of care!. :-) I guess I'm trying to find info about the actual care options available here in Bulgaria (or Plovdiv, specifically). Or just hear from anyone who's dealt with elderly parent care... or even tried shipping them off to another country. :-)

I've been doing some research, and it certainly looks like another win for little Bulgaria! :-)

Back in the UK, we have until recently, arranged multiple daily care visits (approximately £25-£30 per hour (or visit, as often they only pop in for a few minutes). We now realize this is insufficient so we have been looking at the local options for a live-in carer, or moving to a care home. A live-in carer from a care agency is approximately £5,000 per month, or nearly 70,000 euros for the year. And a nearby care home is even more expensive at £7,000 per month, the best part of 100,000 euros annually.

And the current UK system still mandates that you pay for your own care (from your house/savings) unless (or until) you have less than £25,000.

The home-care equivalents from a Plovdiv care agency are 20 lv for a short visit, or 35lv for 4 hours. Or 400 euros per month for a live-in carer (less than 5,000 euros annually). A care home is slightly more expensive at 600 euros, or just over 7,000 euros annually.

So you can pay the same money for 1 year of care in the UK, or nearly 14 years in Bulgaria!

Wow, that's a huge move for him! But if he doesn't have much in the way of family or friends left in the UK, the challenges of the move will probably be more than offset by the benefits of seeing more of you and being able to afford more and better care in Bg.

The biggest issue for him is likely to be the language one. No matter how good the quality of care, it can worsen confusion for someone who's already a little muddled if they can't understand what people are saying. Though as many carers and health professionals in the UK come from non-English speaking backgrounds, that could be as much of an issue if he stays in the UK!

I hope it works out for him, and you. If he's the sort of chap who's has something of an adventuresome spirit, it should work out fine!

The reason that I'm living here by myself is because my elderly mother in law refuses to contemplate moving to Bulgaria so get only child my husband is staying in the UK to look after her. He cannot leave her mind you he's my second husband and he's always been honest with me saying " I'll marry you but we'll not live together" that was twenty three years ago.  So I'm here and he's in the UK and that's that.

I'm just so grateful that I didn't bring up my boys that way, it's not good a child even an adult child being expected to put their life on hole by an elderly parent. But that's that
