Be prepared- things are changing and for me at least I couldn't even get an appointment with the Italian Consulate in the US to get a visa to stay in Italy longer than 3 months. I'm going as a tourist and will return 3 months later.

Also - there's a new system in the EU starting soon where everyone needs this "visa" to stay even for a little while.
