Throwaway tix, asking for a friend

A friend of mine is planning a SE Asia trip very soon. He's going to end in the Philippines after Thailand. I mentioned getting a throwaway before he goes to Bangkok airport since his plan is to stay here for more than 30 days to look at retirement areas. He doesn't seem to think he'll need one since he has a round trip back to the states. But that ticket is beyond 30 days.

I told him to just spend the $15 and get one. To which he says is too confusing and may just cut the trip short leaving Phils inside of 30 days with a reservation. To me it's a no brainer to cover your arse with the airlines in Bangkok to board for Phils.

Consensus?

Yes a tacky situation Larry and as you are aware many varied and conflicting answers to the 30 day debacle and then some, only a suggestion why not get your friend to speak directly with the carrier and get their take on exit tickets, 30 days or as long as you have an exit ticket.

Mentioned before that my exit tickets for the last 13 years are 2 to 6 months out, my most recent returning from Singapore late Feb 23 my exit ticket from the Philippines was over 2 months out and had to show them the ticket and payment as it was a different carrier than I flew in and back to Manila. Stamped my boarding pass and here I am and threw the ticket away.

Others seem to have different experiences.

@bigpearl

Just so I didn't misunderstand. You DID have a throwaway ticket because you were 2 months plus out?

bigpearl

@Larry.

Ben and I flew to Singapore for a weeks holiday back in Feb for my 3 year visa run, return tickets Manila/Manila with PAL, before we flew out I purchased a flight from memory 9 weeks out from our return to Manila as I know the rules, the flight to Hong Kong was with a different carrier, at the time the cheapest was AU 75 bucks, my b@tch is that PAL upon check in never queried me for an exit ticket and simply gave me my/our boarding passes, going through immigration I was stopped and asked to please go to this window in that direction, yes sir no problem, the lovely clerk at that desk asked me for my passport and exit ticket from the Philippines/flight details, I presented the docs and 2 minutes later my boarding pass was approved/stamped and straight through immi.

Point is Larry why didn't PAL ask for my exit ticket while processing my check in. As said in other threads I have flown in and out dozens of times over 13 years with 2 to 6 months return (exit) flights and never questioned as it was always with the same airline, different carrier seemed to raise a red flag as the PAL staff appear to have dropped the ball on check in but immi picked it up.

As mentioned your friend needs to talk to his/her carrier and their take on the situation.

When flying to the Philippines my ticket was for a round trip showing entering date & exit date.

Now for a new question:

If you are entering the Philippines with your wife on a Balikan visa, good for one year, is it necessary to show an exit ticket? 28 days, 365 days or no dates?

bigpearl

F.W.I.F. Is that like OMO? Or WTFDIC?

While I'm not nor ever will avail the Balakbayan privilege from my reading it is only granted upon arrival to this fair country and not guaranteed, a good question Bob as I'm sure the many expats here can/will answer with pros/cons and their personal experiences and the need for an exit flight.

Cheers, Steve.

@Larry Fisher

No.

There is no requirement for an onward ticket with a Balikbyan visa

Enzyte Bob

LarryFisher said . . . No.There is no requirement for an onward ticket with a Balikbyan visa

When entering the Philippines for the first time with your Filipina wife you are issued a Balikbyan visa upon arrival.

.

But prior to your arrival you don't have any visa so the airline possibly will refuse your bording without an exit ticket.

@Enzyte Bob Had this happen to me on my most recent trip, Travelling with my wife on Air Canada, had to buy a ticket at the gate on my phone, thankfully I was able to get internet on the plane and cancel it enroute. Very stressful situation, would not recommend.
