Dollar denominations for BA Salta trip

Post new topic

My wife and I are traveling back to Argentina to visit in-laws. It's been 4 years. I know our hotel is taking dollars on the Blu-rate but I was wondering if other stores are taking dollars and if so what denominations. I'm sure most restaurants are but what about smaller items like chinos? If most businesses are taking dollars should I bring smaller denominations like fives and tens? What denominations would you recommend for a 3-week trip. We will be in Buenos Aires and salta City. I dread the thought of having to carry a lot of pesos. Thanks.

I would not count on any stores accepting dollars and certainly not in smaller denominations. For the most part, your only option is to bring 100 dollar bills and change them at the dólar blue rate in cuevas (caves). Try to get stuck at the end with as few pesos as possible because it's nearly impossible to change them back into dollars in smaller denominations. Also, only bring the 100 dollar bills with the blue stripe. Many caves will not accept anything else and if they do, the will give you less money for them. I know... ridiculous, but that's the way it is.
