Employer terminated me during probation

Hi,

I have worked in bigger companies before in Singapore, but this is the first time ever in my career that I got terminated during probation, and the employer provided a letter mentioning the reason as poor performance.  And mentioning that my probation did not pass. I got the EP with the employer for 2 years, and I just worked for 2 months. Actual reason is my manager identified I was looking for another opportunity since this company didn't have proper process when working, and no work-life balance at all. I completed all the allocated tasks on time, but suddenly this happened.

I'm planning to relocate back to my home country for the time being and find a new job in Singapore, and come back. I have worked in Singapore previously 2+ years, and for a while worked again in my home country as well. This is the 2nd time I came to Singapore on an EP.

Will this impact to my future EP applications, and job opportunities in Singapore. If so, is there any method to overcome from this such as not mentioning this job on my CV, etc.

Appreciate your ideas.

Thanks

Hi @ashok101

I would not suggest you to hide it from CV, as there is record with MOM and your future employer may find out.

As long as you secured a new job in Singapore, I don't think there will be adverse impact on EP application if you're retrenched from previous employment.

In terms of seeking new employment, not sure if it would be challenging. Whatever it is, just have faith in yourself.

I think it is o.k. to leave this short engagement out of your CV  used for job applications, as this isn't valuable infomation for potential employers.

But you cannot omit it from future work pass applications, as it is already in MoM's database!

@denseoi

Thanks for the reply

ashok101

@beppi

Thanks for the reply, and I thought the same.

So once I removed it from the CV, and upon selection for a job at the work pass application stage I can share the updated CV with the employer by adding that removed employment.

I'm just curious whether the employer will notice that I have added a new employment in Singapore which I hadn't mentioned in the initial CV.

Appreciate your idea.

Thanks!

Based on a couple of mates' experiences, Unfortunately, your future SP/EP will be affected to work again in Singapore, as MOM does not like poor performance and misconduct. Regardless of the reason, you haven't been able to learn what your previous employer reported to MOM. I advise you to DO NOT hunt a job where you start working that wouldn't benefit you.

ashok101

@Merico87

But I have the letter provided by the employer mentioning the reason as probation did not pass.

Merico87

They might give feedback to MOM about you since they terminated your contract a short while

ashok101

@Merico87

Do you mean the employer can let MOM know any other reasons that are false about me?

beppi

@ashok101 If the employer lodges a complaint about you, how can MoM know whether it is correct or not?

ashok101

@beppi

Yes, that's my question as well.

I don't think MOM will blindly accept that since I haven't done any illegal thing in the country or with the company.

And the employer's perspective can be different when it comes to measure the performance of job.

In my case at least the employer didn't conduct any appraisal rounds to analyze my performance, and this is just a sudden thing.

And I have worked in Singapore before for MNCs with salary increments.

Additionally during COVID time I dedicated to my employer by travelling to Singapore with COVID restrictions, and quarantine in the hotel(SHN - Stay Home Notice).

MOM has records under my name for all of these scenarios, and I don't think they will solely depend on a stupid employer's feedback about me.

Merico87

I understand you are talking about the factual that you achieved in the review company. Every employer has to give feedback when they terminate the contract of their employer that feedback is confidential. Furthermore, you were terminated in a short period, for the case, MOM would raise questions about the reason for rejection within a few months. Finally, they wouldn't give you positive feedback as they identified that you were looking for an opportunity. I had a friend who used to work with one of the biggest banks in Singapore. he is very impressive. Track record of proven; unfortunately, his contract was terminated for the corporate politics issue, so they attempted to find a fault of him, ended up they terminating his contract and give fabricated feedback to MOM, now can't find any job in Singapore

ashok101

@Merico87

Thanks for sharing your friend's story with me.

So which means before applying for a work pass, even a potential employers for me can search the MOM database, portal with my details for my past track records?

Or this can only seen by MOM?

Because still, I can try to go ahead with the process to applying for a work pass and see what happens.

beppi

@ashok101 Only MoM can see their own internal records.

I read through the entire discussion. In my experience, our HR tell MoM the reason for not extending the contract or abruptly terminated someone’s emoloyment.

In this case, HR must have informed MOM why they are not continuing with you further. i have very doubt that they have mentioned you were searching job elsewhere. They must have mentioned about your performance and during the probation they are not proceeding with the employee.

I have a question, how did your manager come to know that you are searching a job? Or there was some incident triggered the speculation?

You were saying that no work life balance, not sure in which field you are working but in IT sector its tough to maintain work life balance in Singapore. Good  luck

ashok101

@beppi

Ok

ashok101

@ashok101

Thanks for sharing this.

So my manager was like my colleague. I was just reporting to him. But we worked together.

One day a recruiter did call me, and I was answering to the phone while I'm on my seat since the manager was away for a while.

But I suddenly noticed that he is behind me and listening to the conversation.

Definitely, he should have heard that since I asked about the salary, technologies, and more details from the recruiter.

So on the following day there was a sudden meeting scheduled with a director, and my manager behaved like it's just a normal meeting.

But it had scheduled by the director after my manager's information to the director, and I got terminated straight away.

The funny thing is they didn't even conduct a single appraisal round, or feedback from me regarding my duties during the probation.

I'm just curious after a such incident like terminating during the probation by the employer, is there a way to lodge a complaint/feedback providing from the employee's side to the MOM?

beppi

@ashok101 Well, many employers fire illoyal employees - and conducting a job search during work time and in hearing distance to the boss is a grave illoyalty! If the employer did report this to MoM (ask them!), it might well lead to subsequent rejections. You have only yourself to blame!

Merico87

MOM will accept no feedback from your employees. I am sorry to have heard of your story, which is unacceptable to most employers in Singapore. Since we are pass holders, we must be careful whatever we do at the workplace. They wouldn't give you positive feedback to MOM when they cancel your permit.

ashok101

@beppi

Thanks for the comment

ashok101

@Merico87

Thanks for the comment

ashok101

Thanks again for the comments, everyone.

Still I like to challenge my ex-employer.

So I do the maximum that I can do for that.

I'll find a job at an MNC and going to try applying for the EP again.

Will update you guys once I get an outcome with MOM.

Merico87

I empathize with you! Hope the best 1f44f.svg1f44f.svg1f44f.svg
