Greetings,

Where should I start?

I guess you could call me a reluctant world traveller. Thanks to my father and his job in the Canadian government, I've been to quite a few hotspots in my lifetime. The Watts Riots of 1965, Beijing in the early 70's during the Gang of Four era, Madrid at the end of Franco's reign. I've always been a square peg in a round hole.

After a brief stint flying C-130s for the RCAF, I landed a job at CP Air, married a Japanese flight attendant and was forthwith sent to the Tokyo Office. There were trips to Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Nepal, India, Dubai, Kuwait, Somalia, South Africa for the World Cup, East Timour, Brunei and Fiji.

Currently, I have reached the ripe age of 70 and have an ex-wife, several former GFs, 2 daughters and 2 granddaughters. I'd like to profitably engage in my hobbies, raising tropical fish, gardening, brewing adult beverages and making things spectacularly go boom.

@Julien

Hi , my name is Karla. I am in the USA  and am in the beginning stages of planning to possibly move to Belize. I have a unique scenario and would appreciate any feedback. I am primary caregiver for my 86-year-old mother who is obviously retired. I am her power of attorney. I am 56 years old still working as a nurse part time and am paid through her LTC policy to be her primary caregiver also. She and I are discussing the idea of enrolling her in the QRP program . She would not be able to do any of this on her own, nor would she be able to live on her own so therefore myself, and my family would be coming with her. We all live together in the house that we would be selling ( she and I are on the deed) to buy property in Belize. My two adult children are also her caregivers, we alternate taking care of her between our work schedules.

I do plan to contact the QRP program but I figured this would be a good spot to start getting info. Please feel free to share your thoughts . As I said I am just starting to look into this so I don’t really even know where to begin.

@Karlaclemmer, hey there.  I’m  new on here . what is the QRP ?

eddiemayo1952

Eddie Mayo,  I’m  retired, going thru a divorce at 72 years old.  I’m looking at moving to Belize shortly.  I’ve  never been

outside the US before, so i need to have an experienced expat show me the ropes.    I am considering spending a month on a vaca/exploration trip to find an out of the way place to either build or buy .

jani1622

It stands for the qualified retirement program. I'm not 100% positive, but I believe at least two of the benefits is you needn't pay Belize so much to stay there, and also you can travel into Mexico without having to pay for each person crossing the border. We will be wanting to go to Chetumal Mexico for things like better medical sometimes, Walmart, Sam's club, etc. I'm also considering moving there, so I too would like some answers, or ANY info. So I'll be tagging along to your posts, if you don't mind

eddiemayo1952

Thanks for the info. feel

free to tag along.

    @Karlaclemmer, hey there.  I’m  new on here . what is the QRP ?        -@eddiemayo1952

The Belize QRP is run by the Belize Tourism Board. It allows a family to import house hold items and a newer vehicle duty free for a limited time, but requires one to deposit $2,000 USD per month into a Belize bank. The requirement to pay Immigration $100 every 30 days to extend each person's Visitor Permit for at least the first year is the same as for those seeking Residency. During that first year you can only be out of Belize for a total of 14 days. I have been told it can take more than a year for the granting of the residency so the trips to Imagination and the $100 30 Day fee per person can go on for much longer.

Please watch the video and read the info on the 2nd link I posted.

Some info in that video seems to be new and it sounds like the timelines might have changed from the last time I looked closely into the QRP.

@Julien

Hi,

We've been living here for the past 11 years and building slowly but very surely a huge family house/airbnb in Vista Del Mar. We came in 2013 under the QRP program, and had planned a private family resort, but the project turned into a potential Airbnb/BnB instead. We are still working on it but now, at the ages we're at, this project would be way to big for us. So, very sadly, we are ready to let go of our dream and let it become the reality of others who have the vision and energy we once had.  If some of you are looking at properties to transform in airbnb, pretty sure you would like to finish this one and have a very lucrative airbnb in this neighborhood, We would love to invite you over for a visit that will blow your mind. Possibilities here could be of around 16 rentals. We're on the Canal leading to the sea in the back of the property, and have a very nice sea view in the front. This house is a true jewel and was built to last 100 years. We are proud of our achievements but ready to move to a more relaxing life. 1f609.svg

Hello all.  My husband and I are in the process of building a home on Caye Caulker.  We have been approved for the QRP program.  We love the island and are excited to spend more time there.  We are planning to ship furniture and other items from the U.S. and would love to hear any advice and experiences.

Thank you:)

doyle2df

@Julien Hello  my name is doyle but please just call me D I have been looking for my place to retire for a couple years now and I hope I found it. I am trying to find information on leasing a small house in punta gorda everything I have read says it is a quiet laid back place and that is what I am looking for. I don't need a big place just a small room hope you can help get me in touch with someone so I can prepare for this transition

jaredscott

Hello.

I'm Jared, and I have wanted to move to Belize for years. After doing a lot of searching online, and looking at house prices, I have it on my mind to move down there and possibly start building some affordable houses to sell. It seems to me that decent housing in that area is much more expensive than what you would expect, judging from the rest of the economy there.

bob212x

@Julien Hi My name is Bob I'm in my 60s and I live in San Antonio Texas.

I did a little research on living overseas for a lower cost of living.

I saw that Belize is very near to the US and people spoke English there also, which brought my attention to Belize.

I have a modest pension to retire with.

I am also hoping to find a nice lady to share the rest of my life with.

Hello everyone,

My name is Paul and I'm seriously considering a move to Belize.  My wife, daughter and mother-in-law visited AC and toured some of the mainland a couple of years ago and loved it.  My wife has since passed away and I find myself lost.  I'm not quite old enough for the US social security but I think I still can meet the QRP requirements. I'm thinking of coming in February for a month or two to try a couple of places.  Hoping I can find some long term rentals for the Cayo area and maybe a less touristy beach area.  I'm not a nightlife kind of person. Just looking for some friendly area to reflect on life. I appreciate any feedback!

Hello everyone I am Marilyn Graham a retired female senior in the US. Looking to relocate or thinking about Belize but I'm kind of leaning toward Costa Rica now for health Care reasons, anybody have any thoughts?

sullivancathy86

Hello everyone Im soon turning 60 and with the current situation in the US I am seriously considering brciming an expat looking at a few places and Belize is on my list I welcome any information to help with my decision.

Dixietom

I’m in the same space as you. Except I am married to a younger man and we still have his teens. 15 and 16. But I want out!

grannybunni

Bob and Linda here!  Living in Arizona, in our mid 70's, and fearful of the incoming administration, so considering relocating to Belize.  We are in the process of finalizing a trip in early

April to tour parts of Belize, including areas where expats live.  There will be some "free" days when we would love to meet any of you to get more first hand info.

ffttbz

I get on a plane 01 January. I am going to San Ignacio. I will be looking for very cheap apartments long term. Any rental contacts would be appreciated. I am not a rookie so assimilation will not be a problem. I spent 7 years, 2004 till 2011 as a govt. contractor because of 9/11. 9 countries spread out over 4 continents, after that I lived in Thailand for 10 years did not step foot back in the USA till 2023, now I am done. I know what I am doing

Edwardo Garcia

Hi everyone for anyone planning on moving to corozal I am a Local realtor and would love to answer any of your questions about real estate or moving down to belize.

Aerodex

@grannybunni

LOL I felt the same way mid-way through 2015, so I bought a house in Belize.

But we all lucked out and the country was never better off for the next four years.

Now my fear is the disaster that is currently brewing in the final 44 days until common sense returns.

Today at 82, I love both countries as a snowbird in Belize during the winter.  Fear not, all is well, enjoy life to its fullest. 😀
