Starting to plan a trip to South America for about 4 months time.   Uruguay is high on my list.

@lilyleigh What state are you and Ron located in? I am in SW Virginia -- Blue Ridge Mountains. Hoping to get to Uruguay for a visit this fall to explore possible move. Cheers, Joanne

My wife and I live in Australia and are planning  on retiring  to Uruguay in the next few years.  The world is a changing place and the Australia we grew up in has changed and become a place that no longer shares our values. We are looking forward to engaging in a life in Uruguay, and will be trying to learn the language, and hoping there are  expats that  have been through  similar experiences and are able to give some good insights and advice on what to expect.

Hello,

I think I understand what you are referring to.  That is why I am here in Uruguay and so far I love it.  We do have an election coming up though ...

Should you have any questions please let me know.

I would be interested why you are interested in Uruguay because it is a choice that indicates you have discarded the usual choices (which I have done too.

May you make the right decision.  It is such an important one.

My partner and I will be moving to Uruguay in the next months. Mid November we will be visiting, inspecting a chacra of our choice, then the true move preparations will start. For I while I will be the person asking questions, later on I expect to provide some answers as well.

Visited Colonia del Sacramento last year for a day and fell in love thanks to my tour guide. Since then I kept saying I would like to move there and due to recent events I am really considering it. I just would like to live my life as a gay man and not have to worry about my human rights. My biggest concern is dating since I’m only 35. I work remote and I’m sure could convince my startup employer to allow me to move so that’s not an issue. I have a 10 year old dog Stella and she’s never flown so I’m nervous about that as well. I decided to give myself a max 2 year timeline, hopefully sooner if I can figure everything out.

Hi,

I am very seriously considering a move to Uruguay with my preteen kids next (US) summer. We currently live in Chicago, and they attend a dual language Spanish-English school. I have a US employer who's agreed to let me work from abroad but I need to figure out more about the taxation situation (confirm my employer won't be obligated to do anything) and figure out where we'd want to be, whether in Montevideo or elsewhere. Our resting spot will very much depend on the school situation. I'd love to be able to put the kids into public school but know nothing about the quality.

Thanks!

Hi,I am new to this forum.

Some introductions:

I am retired Veteran, nurse, tutor, host for foreign exchange students.

I am learning new skills in office programs and some coding.

I can cook.

I love the semi-rural life growing a garden and house plants. I would like to have chickens again.

I  live in New England, USA. Land prices are insane. Especially since COVID and all the city people (NYC) moved to the countryside and ruined everything. Then, the first winter- they deserted it but left their high prices.

The same with Californians in Texas, except they don’t leave.

Anyway, The new administration is coming in January 2025. If I lose my HUD/VAsh (Veteran’s) housing subsidy then the rent will be undo-able. I will be living in a tent again. The weather and the crime in the US make that very unsafe, especially at my age.

I have been wanting to move to South America for decades.

I was born and lived in Texas. We traveled to Mexico (away from any border) once a month for medication and stuff. We could cross over with a drivers license in 1994. We drove to San Jose del Cabo in 1995, and car camped along the way.The people were welcoming and gracious. They had high morals and standards- the expectation of crime went down significantly the further you got away from the border. I read that it is not so now.

My daughter’s in laws are from Uruguay. They left in the 1970’s and’i0’s when the government was not so stable.

Uruguay looks very stable now.

I am accustomed to living a slow life, a farm life, or a small city life.

I have skills. I will maintain some regular income if the US administration doesn’t cut it.

So I am developing some new skills and a small business.

Thank you for receiving me,

¡Me siento bienvenido!¡

Hi Cristina, I'm Crystal. I'm a 55yo mom living in Texas with two children below 14 and my elderly father. He was already unable to afford rent, food, medical care here (despite being pretty healthy) on his SS only. I, too, am looking at my retirement accounts and considering if it will be enough to last 20+ years. I'm looking at Uruguay because of

1) Modern and available internet Infrastructure

2) Government stability

3) Affordable healthcare

4) Free education system (up to and including college!) for my kids.

5) Reasonably honest judicial system.

From what I can see of homes, they are only a bit cheaper than the US and has lots to do with where you live. I fully intend to continue working as a Digital Nomad until my official retirement.

The added bonus? I have family in Paraguay and  moving to Uruguay will put me within driving distance of familial support.

How soon were you thinking of moving?

SafeNSalty

@heisersingh

I'm in the same situation!  2 pre-teens and my elderly father. Let me know what you end up deciding.

@SafeNSalty

Hi, Crystal, a little FYI for you. I've just checked my internet speed from central Colonia and it's 210 Mbps.

As a retiree, I was required to buy a house as my main residence for a minimum of US$100,000. Mine was a little more than twice that and it's more than enough for two. Houses start looking handsome at around $390,000.
