Good morning. I rented a place for my holiday there and the owner, with the promise to repay the deposit, told me one day prior my check in date, that the property is not available anymore as it was sold. Can he sold it when there is a deposit from someone who want rent it? Thank you.

Yeah, most likely they can (I'm not a lawyer, especially not a Thai lawyer, so I may be wrong.)

My guess is that if they are refusing to return your deposit you can probably get them to help you get that back, but as far as them helping you get some sort of enforcement of your booking, or compensation for the sudden cancellation ... Get a lawyer, I'm sure they'll take your money, but I'd cut my losses, take the 'L' and move on.

Thailand is not 'The West' ... Police might run the odd 'check point' stitch up (stop vehicles at a check point with the goal to find small legitimate 'paperwork' violations, for lunch money) but in general they stay out of people's business and expect people to handle their own disagreements so outside of possibly downtown Bangkok, you'll have to be driving a truck announcing over a loudspeaker that you are 'running drugs' before the cops will notice you and attempt to chase and stop you.
