New US expats in Spain tax questions :-)

Post new topic

Hola everyone,

My spouse and I, Americans, just moved to Madrid and will be applying to the Beckham tax regime. Have a few questions if someone could please help...

1) Re. Form 8802, to prove US tax residence for the years 2019-2023:

-- Question 8: Do we have to indicate every period of just the most recent one, since 2023 taxes are not due yet? (so, simply say 202212)

-- Question 11: "Enter the number of certifications needed" ... should I say 5 or 10 (since I'm also asking for my spouse's in the same form, same 5 years, just for Spain)-- Any other tip when filling and sending the form to ensure smooth processing?

2) Re. future US taxes and filings like FBAR, and assuming we have a quite simple situation -- all assets in the US, will be renting in Spain, opening an Spanish bank account to manage expenses here, will pay Spanish taxes for Spanish income (under Beckham) and then use that as a Tax Credit when filing US taxes. Question is, is this all quite simple to DIY, using TurboTax or similar, or do you need to hire a CPA with experience working with expats? So far we have always used TurboTax, and asking around people don't seem too happy with their CPAs.

Thank you for any tips, gracias!! Btw, does the US Embassy in Madrid offer relevant resources/ events? Visiting the webpage I don't see much going on...
