Greetings in Naval Biliran Letey from US to visit wifes family. Wife of  18 years wants to buy family 3 ha coconut farm with her money.  What is the best way to transfer US $20,000 from US to Pi's.  The family does have a BPI account here and are good with money.   Any input suggestions opinions or wise cracks greatly appreciated.

Offhand I would go with the old way and tranafer via SWIFT bank to bank for that amount of money. But try to.make sure that, on Philippines side, she transfers into a dollar account and not a peso account. Reason: If you tell your bank on US side to transfer pesos, they will automatically go to a 3rd party currency exchange *in the US* before sending. That peso dollar rate is always extremely low according to my bank, first because they are exchanging in the US and second they are making an obscene profit because they can and most people do not check. But if you transfer here in dollars to a dollar account, then you convert to pesos at the favorable local bank rate. And in terms of exchange rate, if it is 58 the US exchange may give you as low as 52. If a 6 peso delta, that would be an extra 20000*6 pesos or around $2600.00 extra cost over a 58 exchange rate. Other variants of the problem: You are paying in dollars but they want pesos; make sure they don't assume a rate of 58 because that is the rate seen on facebook, make they agree to accept pesos in accordance to with you currebt daily rate at the bank. In my case I actually had the seller accept a rate about 2 pesos less than bank actually provided so I made a little money on it.

Just a side note from someone who built a house on Biliran Island. Up until 1992 Biliran was a sub-province of Leyte. In 1992 Biliran became an independent province so the location you mention is Naval, Biliran not Naval, Biliran, Leyte. It does cause confusion at times. My wife was born in Biliran in 1981, when it was still Leyte, so her live birth certificate states that she was born in Leyte province. She in now living in Biliran province in the same barangay she was born in.

I transferred a similar amount from my Wells Fargo checking account to my wife's PNB account in Naval just doing a wire transfer. I encountered no problems and PNB gave me a very good exchange rate.

Good luck with purchasing the property.

And that is good because the Philippine side gave you the good exchange rate meaning you were able to transfer in dollars to PNB Philippines. That is how it should be done. I emphasize this because their transfer is $20k and you can gain or lose a few thousabd dollars on the exchange rate depending on how you do it.When you make the bank transfers, there may be a 50/50 chance that you will choose to send dollars or pesos. You did it right but my bank says many customers  screw themselves by sending pesos exchanged in the USA at a uniformly crappy exchange rate and your USA bank cannot help you with the rate.
