I would like to know, where I can search for renting a house. I wish to live in the area around Bugibba.
Do you have any ideas?
Thank you.

Hi Irene,

welcome to our forum.

I saw from your profile that you are planning to come to Malta next year. The rental market here is quite fast ,you look, you find, you sign and you move in. So don't look that much in advance. Places come on the market all the time.

Don't expect too much in way of a garden! Malta has fields and lots of rocky, dry areas but houses generally only have small gardens if any at all unless you want to go for a villa.

i would agree with ricky on this one - by all means look at the estate agency websites here to get a feel of what you can get for the budget but dont expect anything as the market moves quickly and the agents dont really respond too well when its way in advance of the expected move time. Further that malta being a small island most properties are apartments with balconies and maisonettes with small internal yards...unless you are planning a villa and or townhouse with a garden but even then these are few and far between or are very very expensive.

Hi Ricky

Thank you for your advices. I just hope for some space outdoor for my cats, as they are use to. I will look after a house, next time, I visit Malta. Came home sunday after 2 visits this year.

Best Regards

Hi Irene,

we also have a cat that likes to be outside. We rent a ground floor duplex apartment with a large high-walled yard that our cat can't escape from. I would not recommend a yard or garden that the cats can get out from.

Before we had a townhouse here in Sliema with a very small internal yard. Also cat proof !

So places do exist but it takes a lot of looking and might prove to be more expensive.

As already said, check out real estate web sites for examples but don't expect them to still be on the market next year. Get a feeling for the market and prices and locations. You can expect to be able to bargain the price down a bit , especially if you intend to rent longer.

Hi Ricky

Thank you for your advice. I do also know, that it's not realistic to look after a house right now, but I would like to know the possibilities and prices to be prepared. I hope to be back at Malta very soon again.
I intend to stay for many years, maybe the rest of my life at Malta, so I will be able to rent for long time.

Enjoy Malta, I visited Sliema one week ago..... and I miss Malta.

Hi Irene,

for something with a small garden or ground floor terrace or yard you are probably looking at a rent of 500 € upwards depending on where you rent and what you want. Could go up to 1000 € or more if you want something really nice.

In the middle of nowhere might be a bit cheaper.

Utilities are extra of course.

Hi Ricky

Thank you, I will try to find something around the 500 Euro. Out in nowhere can also be okay, so long there will come a bus sometimes. Where I live now, also in nowhere, we only have a bus, when the school children are going to school. None in the vacations. After what I have seen at Malta, there are much more busses :-)))

Hi Irene,

just make sure that when you are here you really look at the locations and also the exact street. If you are looking for a social life being in the middle of nowhere might not be so good but cheaper! Depends what you are looking for.So just look around when times come!

And check out the regulations for bringing cats to Malta.

Hi Ricky

I will make sure, which possibilities I can have, when I both want a house and my cats at Malta. Just read today inhere, that new rules about animals will come from January 2012, so will wait to see them, before I go to the vet.
I would like to have a social life too, but I also like peace, and I create jewellery and other creative stuff.

Do you know, if it will be very expensive to bring some furnitures etc. with me from my home now?
I can read in here, that there are some troubles about buying furnitures at Malta, both the prices and the delieveringtimes.
I do have something, I will need to bring, because of my creativities, but right now I have no idea about, what it will be.

Cheers

Hi Irene,

your main consideration bringing furniture with you , apart from the cost, is that houses and apartments in Malta are generally furnished. Looking for an unfurnished one will limit your options a lot as you want a yard or garden !

Just something to consider.

Can anybody clarify for me the estate agent definition of 'maisonette'.  When I look at properties, some maisonettes seem to be the top or bottom of a larger house but then some seem to be the whole property.  I am very confused?

thanks chaps

may/should, not will

the intended new rules are already public, the issue is whether Malta introduces them

My understanding of the term is that a maisonette is a part of a property, like a flat or apartment, but is accessed from the outside world via its own independent front door, rather than through shared hallways/corridors.

If you've found some that seem to be the whole property, I'm confused by that too.

I'm not english, and my english is not perfect :-(

wasn't having a go at your English at all, just saying

1. its not certain to be introduced on 1/1/2012, so don't depend on it
2. you don't need to wait until 1/1/2012 to see what the new rules should be
