Depressive software dev salaries in Malta

Where I work, there are senior software developers who make about €70k a year. They’re talented and have years of experience. They certainly didn’t start their career on that salary.

When starting out as a software developer it’s somewhat normal to take a job starting at €25k, even if yes, that’s what customer service in gambling makes.

The trick is to move from company to company after roughly 2 years when you start your career. Eventually you’ll settle and the company will try to keep you rather than let you move.

If you progress to a software architect role then they go at about 85k (in gambling)

This sort of money doesn’t just fall on your lap after doing an online course. There’s a lot more to software development than just writing software and the highly paid ones know that.

The initial low paid jobs are your investment to be able to get the higher paid ones later in life. If you’re impatient and want a big salary quick, this isn’t a career for you.

IT salaries in Malta are not worth bothering with, however cost of things are also fairly good so at the top end you can do well with sub 100k salaries.

My suggestion to people new in the industry would be to go elsewhere to get experience and come back when a bit more senior.

You can earn 2 to 5 times more elsewhere doing the same IT job and if you do eventually come back your experience will have sway.

That said IT salaries are just entirely skewed so Malta ones are probably closer to what we IT people should be earning.
