Whether you are applying for a new visa, or renewing an existing one, there is an important Federal law that may apply to you. Some people may not be aware of this...

So long as your application is accepted while you are legally in Brazil (eg applying for a visa renewal before the previous one expires), you are immediately granted the status of the visa you are applying for while your application is considered, in terms of remaining in Brazil.

You will not be considered guilty of overstaying, being an illegal immigrant, in the wrong, nor subject to any fines. This applies to all visa categories.

Of course, if your application is rejected you may have to leave at once, but this may help those whose applications are delayed, and are still waiting for a decision.
