What can i do to study in Germany while having a portuguese TRC

You can stay in Germany for up to 90 days every six months. You are not allowed to work or study there during this time.

You can't hold multiple TRC , temporary residence cards simultaneously, as you need to be recognized as a legal resident in one specific country.

To study in Germany, you need to first learn German language, as most teaching is done in the language.

Then, you need to apply for a place at the university of your choice.

Once you have that, you have to apply for a student visa. You need to show sufficient financial reserves (over 10000€ per year of study, usually in a blocked account) to get this.

You should not plan to reply on side jobs to finance your living expenses, as your possibilities to work are limited.

First of all, having Portuguese residency but not EU or Schengen citizenship means they have no given right to come to Germany for any purpose other than short term tourism. I think there is some misunderstanding in that the German words “study” or “student” refers to university and not a pupil learning at school. As one needs the equivalent of the German Abitur, which is a 13-year schooling, the poster is obviously not on a level to attend university.

To go to school from the 10th grade on though, a B2 level of German will be required. One under 16 is required to attend school and the schools have to help them if they don’t speak German. But after 16 there is no requirement for school and one can be denied admission if they lack the needed level of German. Thus they likely HAVE to attain the needed level of German first before continuing in school. This could be done in Portugal or in Germany at a language school.

Possibly one will find a normal school that will take them on and get their language skills up to par and let them then continue with their education to the level of Abitur but it is not a given. Schools are already struggling with integrating pupils coming as refugees from countries like Ukraine.

Another obvious question is where one will live and how they will pay for their living expenses at 16. They will not have the right to work in the scenario presented.

he is 16 years old, so a minor, he must have the parents' agreement to have a visa, otherwise Germany will refuse it. also have the B2 in German. the parents will have to finance his stay, i.e. 12,000€ per year. at this age he cannot work, that's clear. the only solution is for him to pass his baccalaureate in Portugal, then he can apply to a German university. but you will have to learn and master German and English fluently B2, there is no other solution. jean luc
