My husband and I are thinking of moving to India next year. The company is in Pillaipakkam near Sriperumbudur. We don't know anything about the area. I just googled it and it looks like it's 45 minutes outside of Chennai. Is it a small village? We aren't sure about housing, would we able to live there and have some sort of life or is it better to live near Chennai and for hubby to commute?

We are Americans (mixed race couple) with two small children (3 and 1) so I just wanted to know how life would be for me and the kids during the day. If we choose to live near his work, would we have to commute to the city for things to do?

I would appreciate a response.

Thanks

Armand

Hi strawberrykitten!

Welcome to Expat.com ;)

Sriperumbadur is not a village - in fact it is a big industrial hub for automotives, tech companies.
I am sure there must be decent housing options since there is so much industry there..you will have to find out the details.
However, commuting from Chennai is manageable. Some companies have buses plying to Chennai. Google shows 45 mins but in peak hours, it is probably like 2 hours - so I would not suggest commuting.

Try looking housing options in Tambaram. I know that is a decent locality..nearest to Sriperambadur...

Thanks so much Johri for the info and Armand for the welcome.

The company hasn't started there yet so we have to make our decision on moving based on information we can find online. Our move won't happen for at least 10 months.

Thanks again.

hi.. its is a bad choice for you.. it is away from main city... as a expat, you will be bored there without proper social interaction.. as it is a industrial area..

I live in chennai and I suggest you to find job options in the IT high way- OMR. If you really dont have options , you can live in Tambaram area- as the other friend mentioned...
tambaram is nice and peacefull recidential area and you can reach your work place at sriperumbuthur in half hour by car..

all the best for your planning

Thanks Raj but the company is bringing us to Chennai so switching companies is not an option.  I just wanted to know more info before we made our decision.

don't worry it is not a bad choice you can live there for the moment and move near your work after you are settled.

Hii ...

The information 45 minutes is completely wrong. It will take a minimum of " one and half to two hours " to reach ur destination. Your place is not sriperambudur, it is a village located near sriperumbudur. And it is not advisable for you people to live in there as others mentioned you can switch over to areas like Tambaram or Ponnamalle. As those areas are considerably developed when compared to sriperambudur. In sriperambudur u cannot see much of living areas. U can only see Industries located over there. So it is advisable to move to a residential area like Tambaram. Form there u can use transportation to reach ur place for work. :)

Hello friend,

As rightly mentioned by few fellow group members, Sriperumbudur is a industrial town away from the main city.
However, the main city is easily accessible from the place.
A normal day travel would be around 60 odd minutes if you stay in Chennai closer towards the Sriperumbudur side.( There are a lot of decent, luxurious townships on the outskirts which would have all basic amenities like Power back up, swimming pool, health clubs within the complex and reputed schools and health services in the vicinity )
You would also have all the daily necessities within reach if you stay in Chennai, which may not be the case in Sriperumbudur )

Hope this helps

Thanks.
