Difference between permanent residence and temporary residence permit

What is the difference between permanent residence and temporary residence permit? The retirement permit is for 10 years but you can apply for the permanent residence permit of 20 years after 3 years. Apart from the number of years validity what are the benefits of this permit. I hope somebody on this forum knows. I have the 10 year retirement permit at present.

As far as I know, there is no specific 'temporary' or 'permanent' residence permit where 'retirement permit' is concerned.

The retirement permit is for an initial period of 10 years, and if you wish to live in Mauritius for a longer period you can extend that permit to 20 years after the first 3 years.

This is a good option -- if you find Mauritius not to your liking, you can leave at any time; if you do like Mauritius you can make sure you can live there for 20 years. What happens at the end of 20 years is not sure.

Since these are time-specific permits, I do not think it allows you to be a 'permanent' resident. I am sure others will be able to clarify this too.

Clearly the Permanent residence permit, although valid for 20 years, is so called as it isn't the same as renewing your 10 year residence permit. So how is the Permanent permit different from the regular permit? Are there any additional benefits you enjoy? Or any other advantage like being a pathway to citizenship?

@Ramelak  There are very limited pathways to citizenship as far as I am aware. The easiest way to get 'permanent' residency is to buy property worth at least $375k and to keep it in your name. However, I may be mistaken. If you get residency via property acquisation, you can work live and play in Mauritius with minimal problems. It depends on your requirements.

If I could get a retirement permit with $375k in my bank account, I could easily pay rent with the interest for 20 years or more ; and have no problems leaving if needed, if circumstances change for me. So, it needs to be thought out properly for the long-term -- whether you need liquid cash in your bank or fixed assets in the form of property which needs maintainance etc. In 20 years the property will increase in value, but this is only if you are willing to sell the property.
