Okay I know.... I'm an idiot but....

I thought that I could set up a GCash account prior to my arrival in the Philippines next month. But, it tells me that I must be a Philippines citizen? Is this true?

No avedisindavid, I'm a foreigner living here and have had GCash for 3/4 years, a pain to set up but achievable.

Good luck, Steve.

If your permanent resident, no problem use your I card as ID I have two gcash accounts and one Pay maya

I need to look further into this. Each time I attempt to open a GCash account I am denied based upon my status as an American citizen.

Very strange. I opened a GCash topic in a Facebook group and it seems that there plenty people HERE that have an account.

If i understand it correctly, there are (at least) two account levels: Standard and "Fully Verified", which gives more options.

I am fully verified, but I have to revalidate before the anniversary of my account. This revalidation can only be done with an ACR card, leaving out approx. 70,000 SRRV holders.

The SRRV ID is an nation wide accepted ID card and the BSP has informed GCash more than once of this. Yet, many of us will not be able to retain the Fully Verified status.

That’s too bad. My wife who is a dual citizen has a card so no issue for us.  I have a new 13 A permanent Visa card which hopefully will suffice for my G cash account

It is a big problem. Actually I was never able to become fully verified with GCASH as a foreigner with SRRV card. Obviously, that business does not care for SRRV customers. My Filipino nephew got a GCASH card for me using only my drivers license. I believe he probably listed me as a Filipino instead of a foreigner. Anyway, I hardly ever use GCASH; i don't consider it a reliable financial tool under the circumstances lol. Instead I use MAYA and I use it a lot. MAYA is similar to GCASH in most respects and there doesn't seem to be much GCASH can do that MAYA cannot. But MAYA will accept you as a foreigner with an SRRV card to have a verified account.  MAYA will not allow American citizens like myself to open a MAYA bank account probably due to USA bureaucratic reporting requirements but I don't care about that. MAYA does not require a reverification from me every year and neither does GCASH because, as I said, I suspect I am listed there as a Filipino. If GCASH did ask for reverification. I would just ignore it and let them downgrade or cancel me.

I too find this strange; it seems like you and I are the only people who had a problem with GCASH verification with SRRV. But perhaps other SRRV people also tried and failed the verified status process and just went on unverified (inconvenient)  or tried MAYA  and it worked.

@danfinn

No, it's not only you and I. In the Facebook group I noticed a few more. Even somebody who received a copy of a letter from PRA to Gcash.

I too opened an account with Maya now.

It seems there must be a high percentage of the tens of thousands of SRRV holders that cannot use GCASH. If I were to possess a letter from PRA to GCASH, how would I use it? The normal online verification process does not involve direct human to human contact with them, it is entirely automated. Perhaps some people are so motivated that they can find a way to contact a thinking human at GCASH and get a manual approval. However, I wouldn't expend a whole lot of effort on these. In my case, I use MAYA to pay electric, water, internet and postpaid globe bills and to load prepaid. Generally I know I could find other online alternatives but MAYA is the most convenient for me. They have debit cards but I would not put more than a few hundred dollars into those wallets because as someone mentioned, if you cannot access your money for any reason there is no consumer agency to help you. I think you should never put more in than you are willing to potentially lose. Maybe in a few years I will trust MAYA as being more stable.
