Hi, I already have a Thai bank account but I’m looking to moving all my monies to that bank however what concerns me is using a debit card to purchase online for example and the card getting used for fraudulent activity?

Therefore what I’m thinking is I would like a travel card or a prepaid card to use and top up using a Thailand Bank

I’ve been searching the Internet for prepaid card or a travel card but had no luck.

I want that extra lay of protection so I would purchase things using the prepaid card or travel card  Instead of using my direct debit card

Any thoughts recommendations would be most welcome? This is getting frustrating trying to sort this out.

Many thanks, Holly.

What I use is the bank's app from k- bank to pay by QR code..

QR code paying is wide spread used here in Thailand.

I do not use my visa debit card at all.

@Walnutcharles

thank you for your reply…

Couple of questions…

If you’re shopping on the Internet do you still use the scan code and how?

I’m trying to avoid purchasing anything directly from my bank account having recently been victim of fraud from my UK bank, I don’t want the same thing happening with my Thai Bank???,

I like the idea of having that barrier between payment and my account to prevent fraud

Lazada is the Thailand website that a lot of people use to buy in Thailand online and yes they take QR code.

I do not use the other website buying sites as they are outside of Thailand and have to go through customs.  I just do not want the hassle.

In the k-bank cellphone app it has a hew ways to pay.

QR code and transfer.   I have used these two for street food stalls,  grocery stores   any stores a any of the malls,  bars,  gogo clubs,  clubs,  Restaurants,  7-11's allover Thailand.

Open 2 accounts,  one for saving and one current. Every account you open you can deny the debit card and pay through application only with QR and transfer.

Or

Open a cloud banking account (wise, bunq etc) with a thb and/or USD account

Lots of options...as.menrooned above as.well

Actual cards should mostly work by the additional OTP code, which is a One Time Pin code (different from the cards pin) that the bank systems sends to your phone nr. and/or on e-mail. That code of 6 digits is always different and must be used to complete your purchase on-line, so that the card is always protected. And when purchasing more often on Lazada then the system recognize your card in combination with your only phone and it's an additional safety cause you harbored approved that at beginning. If your card is used from other device then purchase will refused unless you input your OTP occasionally.

If you still have address in UK , check on Advanzia the Miles&More free Mastercard, that allowed to collect also miles on Lufthansa airlines group. And you can top up an amount and/or refund your expenses by transfer when you want controlling by application the situation. It's a card and an account with IBAN at same time.

Hello-

Way too much liability and exposure using a debit card for purchases anywhere- especially if you are moving all your money to that bank. Sometime back I came across a video that confirmed my way of thinking: youtube.com/watch?v=dPkBJOHxKb0

Addtionally using my credit card racks up airline points over time which I'll put to use.

I do have a Thai bank account with the minimum amount required for my visa- but use it in instances only where I cannot use my credit card typically via "scan" at local markets, etc.  I keep the majority of my cash in my US bank and wire transfer when needed. I  can also use Thai ATM's with my US ATM/debit card and they refund any/all atm fees.

Hope this helps- cheers!

CC using anywhere is a huge risk. I cannot get my head around why the PIN for our ATM is so secretively handled and the CCV is openly placed on the back of your CC which you give out of hand at many occasions or even use online...

I removed the CCV because i cannot always see the pump attendant, retail assistant, travel agent or whomever when they process the payment, but one thing, writing 3 letters is done o so quick.

I have been victim of some unknown CC payments. Now let me tell you my experience.

I always thought that would be because some online seller or its employee, lazada, shopee, ebay, amazon, alibaba, iherbs and a few others were selling my CC and CCV

When however I removed my CCV as I read someone's advise in this online, funny enough, and exactly since then, the fraud stopped....... and never happened again

Now tell me.......

I never thought of that, and most likely not necessary where I live at the moment, but when I move to Thailand, I might just do that :)

It is omni present..... people already have your CC and name, turn the card around and they are good to go..
