Working abroad as a residence permit holder

Post new topic

Hi there.

My wife and I plan to move to Mauritius in November 2025. She will apply for a Retired persons visa. I would still like to continue working for my company. The company is based in Malta and I work on a 17on/13off basis. Would I be able to continue doing this for the next 3 years to 65 when I have to retire. My question is, would I be able to be out of the country for more than 183 days on a residence permit. Thanks

Hello. I do not think there is a requirement of number of days regarding residence permit or even the retirement permit (as long as the money keeps coming in). The 183 days rules are for Tax purposes as far as I know -- I am sure others will come along with more pertinent advice. Keep checking the EDB website, or email them.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help.

much appreciated.

Yes, you can. There is no physical presence test for the retirement permit, only the requirement to show $18,000 per annum transferred to Mauritius. That said, you would be the retirement permit holder's dependent and therefore not subject to any restrictions.

That is interesting. As a dependent of a retired non-citizen, are there really no restrictions on employment?

Merry Christmas!!
