Adventure to Medellin

Post new topic

Nelson GNAKPA

Hello everyone !

I am a young entrepreneur who wants to try the adventure in Colombia next year. I would like to open a small restaurant first and see what happens. I would like to have all the advice and opinions of French expats or others who have experienced or who know people in this situation.

When I talk about advice, it is about: Budget, cost of living, restaurant sector, cities etc.

Thank you in advance and happy new year!!

I'll respond here as my French is rusty, the French language page is not very active, and the response would be the same for anyone.

You will not be able to come and open a restaurant first, unless you already have been here and scoped out a place to rent, where to purchase quality appliances and quality food products.  Without these first, coming here and expecting to build from scratch would take a year (permitting can be a pain).  Plus, you need a visa to do this unless you are Colombian.  I believe it's an investment visa.

If you aren't Colombian or don't have an investment visa, you can come on a tourist visa and start the investigation, and once you are ready to spend money, apply for an investment visa.

As for any brick and mortar:  location, location, location.  In Medellin, this will be most important, especially opening a non Colombian restaurant.

Good luck with your endeavor.  Just be prepared for many delays and cost overruns.
