Hi to everyone :-)

In my search for expat med ins. I came across this blog.

I just got back from the Dominican Republic where I thought I would live but now it's probably Costa Rica...

It's not that easy finding somewhere to live....

Welcome on board Karen!

Why did you move to the DR and now to Costa Rica?

All the best,

Julien

Hi Julien,

You misunderstood as I probably wrote too shortly.

I spend a few weeks in the Dom Rep with friends who live there to see how it is - I decided against moving there later on  because of 3 big negatives.

So, since that seems to be the end of that I am now trying for Costa Rica. It's boring getting lots of papers together and it's expensive but Costa Rica is a bit more into this century than the Dom Rep is. Just take medical care and insurance. It was shocking to ask expats who lived there how they got medical insurance and to receive a blank look, then a vague: OH - we don't have any, we really should look into this. But they bought houses and live there. I find this irresponsible. In fact 2 couples who had been living there over  a year said the nearest hospital was 1,5 hours away and I discovered (back home again with time) that the next hospital was only 20 mins away and has good facilities, but without medical insurance you have a problem.

I wish it were different, I wish it were possible for my daughter to get a job and to have people around in their mid 30's. But most are retired or young surfer/dropouts because what else are you going to do there? After a year or so they go home and this is how it should be but this leaves a gap you know. A generation gap.

It's so beautiful you know, it has everything nature has to give. I do miss it.

I have found international medical insurance companies but one doesn't list the Dom Rep, just about every other country and this is strange. I'm looking at the others to see if they list the countries they cover.

Right, so this is it :-)
