Where to live in Jakarta

Post new topic

malaykiwi

Hi, My partner has some business in Jakarta and is looking for a two bedroom apartment for a 6 to 12mth term and may stay for the next 3 years.  Can someone pls recommend a safe and comfortable place to stay close to nice restaurants and shopping area?  We are looking for a condominium/apartment with swimming pool, gym and spa facilities.  Appreciate feedbacks.  Thank you.

Thanks for the feedback.  We hvnt got a full time rental yet as been staying at Hotel for the last few mths, on and off.  We now seriously looking for full time rental.  Any suggestion helps.

1 - You need to be as close to work as possible. Jakarta traffic is terrible. Many people make the mistake of being near the "Night out" but stand horrendous trips to and from work.

2 - Never bother with anywhere priced in Dollars. That means the owner is after a clueless bule with more money than brains.
Local people don't pay in dollars.

3 - Ask yourself if local people could afford the price you're offered. If you don't think they could, it's probably priced for the foreigner. Try http://www.tokobagus.com/ They have a lot to look at and you'll see the price before you get there.

4 - Watch the contract and make sure you understand everything in it. I've had people try to add the insurance costs and all sorts on to the bill as extras with no clue as to how much those extras will be.

5 - Check who repairs what in the terms of the contract.

6 - Check fees on the place you're looking at.
There will be monthly fees for rubbish collection and security. Make sure you know how much before you sign.

7 - Test all taps and sockets. Then turn all off and make sure the meter is stood still on both.
If the power or water has been cut off it can be a game to get it back on. Same goes for leaks. they can be major jobs to repair and the contract may leave you to foot the bill.

Depending on your friend's budget, I find The Ascott Jakarta's fully furnished accommodations and full-service offering a breeze. Straight-forward monthly charging that includes breakfast and maid service.

You may also want to check out Somerset (same management). It costs a bit less.

Contracts can run from one month onwards. This will give your partner time to assess other apartments if staying longer. Just a suggestion.

I have seen many apartments in the city and not only do they cost the same but sometimes even a lot more with less space. I also prefer dealing with an established company (less headache) than directly with owners and / or their brokers.
