American Thanksgiving Dinner in HCM

Hi Gang,

It's that time of year again.
Starting to get those cravings for roasted turkey,
cranberry sauce and all the trimmings.
I like rice, but after three months,
it is nice to escape "home"
even if it's just for one evening.
Mmmmm...mashed potatoes.
Gravy.
Pumpkin pie.

Thanks to all the fellow expats out there
that helped search and find our best options.

Please keep an eye out
and let us know what you find.

Last year, a group of us met up
at the Black Cat Cafe
for traditional Thanksgiving buffet.
Price wasn't too bad -- I think about $25 a person.

Anyone know if they are hosting that again.
Or other recommendations.
Hotels, etc downtown might offer something.

Let me know if you'd be interested in meeting up.
It was fun to meet other Americans (and locals)
and exchange holiday memories.
Looking forward to doing it again this year.

Thanks,
Brother Donald

Hello Brother Donald,

Ooooh, that sounds really good!  This will be my 3rd Thanksgiving away.  Can't go on much longer without mashed potatoes and gravy.  Count me in.  Let me know what I can do to help.

Hello,

I just ordered delivery from black cat yesterday and they brought a Thanksgiving Day menu with my food. So they are doing the buffet this year. This is my first year in Vietnam and I am looking for people to spend thanksgiving with and hopefully meet new friends. I am 27, female and American :) Let me know your plans so we can meet up!

Hello,
My name is patrick and I just joined the forum. I would be very interested in meeting for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Please let me know if this happens. Thanks and have a good day.

This sounds good, although.. I am English. But I'd give anything for some gravy!

What is the address for the Black Cat Cafe?

Black Cat's Thanksgiving buffet is 28 bucks this year - not bad considering inflation in this country is >20%  Oh and it includes free flow of beer ... yeah !

You can call Black Cat at 0838292055 & get them to fax you the menu - it looks quite impressive.

Cheers.

Thanksgiving Dinner at Black Cat sounds good to me.  It'll be nice to meet some other Americans.  What time do people want to meet?  I assume we'd need reservations.

BrotherDonald

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
So sorry that it has taken me awhile to get back here to the forum.
turkey buffet at the Black Cat Cafe in Saigon
Sounds like a great option
For all us American expats (and other friends)
Who want to sink our teeth into some juicy turkey,
Stuffing, and all the trimmings.
cost is around $28 per person,
But it is tasty and worth the extra money
For a bit of home favors.

I'm planning to be at the Black Cat around 6pm
On Thanksgiving night, Thursday Nov 24th
With a friend of mine.
Please feel free to look around for us --
Probably up on the second floor.
It's a tiny place
Hopefully not too crowded so we can get seats inside.

the address for the Black Cat is
13 Phan Van Dat
In district 1
You can find a good map here on the diadem website:
http://www.diadiem.com/

Phone number for the Black Cat is 08 3829 2055

Please feel free to jn us.
we had a real nice time last year.
Nice to meet other folks
And enjoy familiar tastes.
Yummm!

Hope you can come.

I have a bit of a headache now, but assuming I feel fine after guzzling water for the rest of the day, I should be there.  I'll arrive a little before 6, wearing a green "Soft Power Education" t-shirt and carrying a backpack.

Hope to meet some of you there.

It's my first Thanksgiving away from home. About this time in all prior years, I would be prepping the turkey for the oven and other side dishes. So I go from cooking for 20 people to eating by myself... Hopefully this event will provide a degree of consolation! ;)

Looking forward to meeting you all.

Well, I arrived at the Black Cat Cafe at 6 PM on Thursday with my wife, son and sister-in-law only to be refused admittance because my name was not on their list. Silly me, I did not know that I had to make a reservation. I just took my $100+ to a different buffet on Ngoc Duc Ke. They didn't have turkey and the trimmings but they were willing to accept my money, the food was escellent and we were able to pig out. It also cost me a helluva lot less!

Funny that you were turned away.

Heard that it was pretty dead at the AmCham dinner yesterday with most of the tables not full. It is a stark contrast to previous years when everyone tried to get it.
Anyone going there care to comment about it?

Report on the Black Cat Thanksgiving

We, too, we're turned away for lack of reservations
But luckily we spotted a sign on one table that said it was reserved for 8pm.
We told them that we'd be finished by then
And they let us squeeze in right by the door.
so sorry that we missed Bri597.

Last year, we didn't need reservations
And found at able upstairs no problem.
I guess it's getting more crowded as word spreads.

Anyway,
I met RTWtraveller
And we found the buffet pretty substantial.
we also got seats next to a couple of folks. From Georgia.
Later Linda and a friend also joined us.
As we squeezed in along the wall.

highlight for me was the mashed potatoes and gravy.
turkey, ham and sausage were all tasty.
the sausage was an unexpected  treat.
cranberry sauce was pretty runny,
But the flavor was really good
If you drizzled it over the turkey.

Stuffing a bit dry and crumbly.
Not moisty and sticky the way my mom made it back home.
good assortment of sides and desserts.
pumpkin pie was okay,
But I liked the carrot cake better.
Missed the apple pie,  RTW found it.
I was too stuffed to tackle it.
Sangrias refreshing.

best moment of the evening
going around the table and just saying one thing that we were thankful for.
simple but heartwarming.
good conversation
Nice to share our special day
And count some of the many blessings we have
Both back at home stateside
And here in our new jobs and ventures.

Holiday blessings to all expats out there.
maybe we could try an early Cinco de Mayo
And try out
Black
Cat's Mexican menu sometime in the spring.

Hi Guys,

It is good to know that you guys had a good time during Thanksgiving.  It was terrible that I missed it.  Unexpected things arose; and I didn't get back to south Vietnam until today.

Wish to catch you all next time.  Meanwhile, please share some of your experiences here.

Best wishes to all,
Howie

I know you can order a Thanksgiving meal at the New World Hotel to take it home. They have some type of promotion going on until Dec 26.

Also, those of you really craving mashed potatoes, gravy and meatloaf....ELBOW ROOM!! 52 Pasteur just a few blocks away from the Behn Than Market... enjoy!
