I work in software development and the job interviews in Canada were more technical than the ones I had in France. And prospect employers will contact people who have worked with you in the past (your references).
I've experienced job interviews in at least three steps:
1. Phone screening - you'll be expected to tell why you want to work for this company specifically
2. Technical interview - with exercices to demonstrate your skills
3. If you're successful, you'll have a more HR discussion and you'll get to talk wages expectations.
Then if they want you, they'll check your references.

You have to be very enthusiastic, passionate and positive if you want to get the job.

International students in Canadian universities might find it helpful to consult their career counselor in their school. Most good universities offer this service. Many students ignore it though. They can give you some real good advice, so don't ignore the opportunity. Specially, they can help you get your career/job related terminology right. Also, almost certainly would help you with writing a Canadian style resume.
