Should I rent a car to drive to the Soberania National Park & north?

I am flying into Panama City with my husband and 2 sons (ages 12 &10) and we're considering renting a car to drive to Soberania and explore the rain forest. We hope to stay in the area (maybe Sierra Llorona?) for 3 nights. Is renting a car safe in the remote areas? Is it better to take the bus? There was a tour around Lago Gatun that looked interesting and we thought we'd need a car to get there too. Any thoughts?
