Finding good Maltese job search engines

Post new topic

jmuthe

I am an American with Maltese parents and I visited Malta many times and really enjoyed it. Since I have Maltese parents, I applied for dual citizenship and I am free to legally live in Malta. I work as an electronic technician in New York and would like to find a similar job in Malta. However, before I decide to quit my current job and move to Malta I would like to make sure I get a job in Malta first but I don’t know how I can practically go on a job interview in Malta. If I go on a job interview, I would have to spend hundreds of dollars and use up several of my vacations days to travel to Malta. If I go on the job interview and don’t get the job or don’t like the job, I would have wasted all that travel money and vacation days for nothing.  A typical person may have to go on several job interviews before they find the right job and obviously it would be very impractical for me to keep travelling to Malta for them. I thought that maybe I could request the interview to be made through Skype. Do you think that would work or is there any better suggestions for interviewing in a foreign country?
My second question is, “ Are there any decent internet job sites search engines in Malta?” In America we have internet job search sites like careerbuilder.com, monster.com, and yahoohotjobs.com, and if you search for any job within a twenty mile radius, you could find hundreds of current jobs listed. It seemed that almost every day I found a new electronic technician job posted.  However, I don’t mean to sound insulting, but when I look at an internet job site search engine for Malta, I usually see a lot less jobs posted . You may say, “Well, of course! The USA is much bigger than Malta so of course you will find more jobs posted on American job site search engines.”  However, when I used the American search engines in the past to find my current job, I wouldn’t look for a job that was on the other side of my country. I would just look for something that was at most twenty to thirty miles away, which is about the size of all of Malta and found a lot more jobs posted on the American search engines. It doesn’t seem that job search engines are all that popular in Malta as they are in the USA but I may be wrong. If I am wrong then are there any decent internet job search sites where there are any more than a few current jobs posted at a time. If not then what are better ways to apply for a job in Malta as an electronic technician? Please note, that an electronic technician is not the same as an electrical technician or an electrician or and IT network specialist. An electronic technician is someone who tests and troubleshoots electronic equipment so the job I want is labeled as an electronic technician, electronic test technician, or maybe even an electronic engineer.
Thanks

Hi jmuthe,

welcome to the forum.

I guess the simple answer to your question is that there are not that many jobs available in Malta and if you are lucky to find one you will probably be shocked by the low salary. But as living costs are lower too it can still work out.

The other thing to consider is the 'culture shock' you will experience when arriving from the USA. Maybe not in the first months but soon after! That might be an issue as you are comparing a lot with the US.

You will probably have to obtain Maltese certificates to show your qualifications to work in the electro/electronic trade.

I will keep my eyes open for information/jobs that fit your situation. What is your timeline? When do you wan't to relocate to Malta? Would you be coming with family?

And just one last question: How much does an electronic technichian earn in the US? I know a bit about the US as my girlfriend is American and we lived there so I can judge the kind of salary you would be comparing with in Malta.

Cheers

I doubt very much it being possible (am not sayings its impossible just very very difficult) to have a job tied up before getting here - i have known other well qualified people (not in the same field admittedly) try this and fail. So i wouldnt hold out too much hope for this tack.

I'm skeptical that a high qualified American job in the NY state can be easily found in Malta. I don't know the market for you but I have big doubts because the engineering related to the industry seems to be very under developed. I'm an engineer and I know that in my sector, there is nothing to find here. Malta is more rustic.
I sincerely think that the first thing to do is that you focus on your motivations to come here.
If you want to live here, you will have to come here and see if you like the lifestyle and what kind of jobs you could have.
But I think you have to forget USA if you want to live and work here. To be funny, you have more chances to find a job in China in your sector.
I know it's not easy, but I think, it's important to think about you first and what are really your motivations and aim. But cultural shock is unavoidable for most of us.

Good luck.

I want to thank you all for your replies and I also want to answer your questions. These answers are for Ricky. You asked when I plan on coming to Malta and my answer is that I want to move when I find a job. If it takes a year until I find one, I will be okay with it.  I would not be coming with family but I do have family that are living in Malta. I am not sure how much an electronic technician makes on average but it isn’t much. I make $11 an hour which is a little on the low side since I’ve worked for the company for almost five years, do a good job, and graduated top of my class with a bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering.  Other places may offer a little more like $15 or $16 an hour but it isn’t a field that pays much.  I also have some questions for John2011. First of all, you say you are an engineer. Are you an electronics engineer?  If you are then how did you find your job?  Did you use an internet job search engine in Malta or did you find it another way?  You wrote “If you want to live here, you will have to come here and see if you like the lifestyle and what kind of jobs you could have.” But I don’t understand your logic. You are saying that since it is very difficult to find a job in Malta, I should move to Malta first and then look for a job instead of finding a job and then moving to Malta. If I move to Malta before I find a job and if it really is hard to find a good job in Malta like you said then how would I be able support myself until I find a job? Thanks for your replies and Merry Christmas

as i said in an earlier post MOST companies here want and need to see you and will not offer jobs to people they havent seen in person - maybe a job search visit is the way forward for you, or maybe you save hard for a period of time build up enough savings to support yourself for 6 months here whilst you try to find your job......thats what most people do.

In harsh but simple terms - Would you as an employer offer a job to a person you have neither met spoken to nor seen or even offer a job to them on the basis of cv? I think in most cases the answer is NO. Unless you are very highly qualified or in a specialist field that doesnt exist in Malta.... and that those stated qualifications and experience can be verified by prospective employers.

Its a catch 22 situation you find our self in but at the end of the day its one decision that only you can make - good luck with it.

Hi jmuthe,

I would agree with toon on most answers but we have had friends come to Malta with a job offer in their pocket.  One case was a specialist in IT. But most of the people we know, especially through the forum come with savings to start them off for the first months while looking for a job.

Talking about salary , the salary you are quoting for the US is a lot lower that I expected. That would be the kind of wage you can expect as a foreigner with a qualified job here in Malta. And the money will definitly buy you more in Malta.

You can check this link as to the training offered by Mcast here in Malta:
http://www.mcast.edu.mt/institutes_elec … ring.asp#7

If you send your cv to one or several of the job agencies you have to expect a phone interview first and then a follow -up interview here in Malta.

Stay in contact and I'll keep my eyes open for something that would be in line with what you are looking for.

Hi,

You can't really compare an area the size of Malta in the USA to actual Malta in terms of jobs available. There aren't many posted because there aren't many available.

The best places to look can be found here;

http://joeandharryabroad.wordpress.com/compact-guide-2/

and scrolling to 'work'.

My friend recently moved here from the UK and he managed to secure a job (in igaming) before arriving but this is pretty rare- most companies wont offer a job until they have met the candidate.

Good luck though!
