Hi, I been thinking of the possibility to open a small business in cambodia, have found the costs and procedings associated with start up and visa. But have no clue whats required in bookkeepings? Whats the legal requirments, can one do this by him self or do u have to use a accounting firm, and what costs can u estimate that too?

And labour laws, apart from salary, what other things to consider, legal working hours?, sick payment?, social taxes?.....

Any help apreciated.

Hi ,

It is depend on which type of business you operation . Example , 1) if you run a company , then you need to ask for License + VAT number , in this case you need to have proper accounting in respect of Cambodia law ( you need to hire a specialist ) .

2) if you just open a restaurant or shop ,then you just apply for " Patent " license , then you do yrselt accounting and the Tax fee is about USD 150-200( small shop , ) .

However for both example 1 + 2 , you need to have someone ( Cambodian citizen ) represent of the owner of business . I dont think that foreigner can stand for 100% owner .

Hi there!  I have just joined this site today and am reading through all the posts I can find about starting up a small business in Cambodia, specifically Siem Reap.

Micke, can I ask you where you have been doing your research about the appropriate visas, requirements and formalities for starting up and licensing a business in Cambodia?

I have been searching through literally dozens of sites offering advice and am just not sure where to start finding the 'basics.'

Not wanting to buy property, just rent a commercial space.

Any direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I have been researching for the past 24 hours about starting a business in Cambodia, and found another Expat.com which contained the following information posted by Aallyah01:

The basics. if you are opening a 'single ownership' business, you will need:

a rental contract agreement for your future office/venue
copy of your passport
4 passport sized photos
$250 USD

This all needs to be submitted to the Misistry of Commerce along with your unique company name.  Registration takes about 2 weeks time, and according to Aallyah01, can only be done during the months of January through March?  I am unclear why this would be the case.

The second step is to contact the local Chamber of Commerce in the town where you are setting up business.  The paperwork sent from the Ministry of Commerece will need to be completed there, along with a translator, as it will all be in Khmer.

The Chamber of Commerce will give you a registration number which allow you to set up a bank account with the National Bank of Cambodia, with a minimum deposit of $400 USD.  The bank will issue a VAT number to your business.

Every month, you will be required to visit the local tax office to give your declaration of earnings.

This information is paraphrased to make it a bit more coherent, but this is the basic run down of what I've found out.

The national Ministry of Commerce and local Chamber of Commerce in Siem Reap websites haven't been very good resources for information, as I can't seem to locate much about how to start up a new business as a foreigner.

I would love any feed back on the above information, if you are able to confirm anything, or dispute, please let me know!

All the best,  Jason
