Hi, my husband and I are looking into moving to Malta with our baby boy. I've had a quick look through some of the topics and look forward to receiving any info / advice that anyone who has been through the move can offer :)

Hi,

welcome to the forum.

The answers to most questions can be found in previous threads. Take your time to go through past posts and feel free to ask specific questions.

Asking for any info is just too unspecific and would mean writing a book -)))

What is your situation? Looking for a job? What kind of job? Why Malta? Generally speaking if you are struggling in the UK you will struggle in Malta but with more sun !

Cheers
Ricky

Hi Ricky,

We have quite a few friends in Malta already, both Maltese and Brits - obviously we are getting info / advice from them, but as they are quite keen for us to move I decided to have a look for some more impartial opinions!
Our situation here is:
JP works as a tattoo artist, but also has his class 1 HGV license
I'm on maternity leave, but usually work as an administrator (currently in a private hospital, but previously in a few different industries).
If / when we move, JP would be looking for full time employment (our friends may be able to offer him something). Ideally we would prefer for me to be a stay at home mum, but we are aware that this may not be possible - in that case I would be looking for part-time work.
Neither of us are "career" people - will do whatever work we can get, lol.

In all honesty, the crappy British weather all year round is one of the main reasons for us considering a move. There are other reasons - pace of life etc, but it comes down to the fact that its something we've spoken about for a long time now, but we've both agreed that if we're going to do it we want to get settled before our son is ready to start school etc (he's only 5 months old, but obviously a big decision to make followed by lots of planning etc).

We're by no means struggling here, just at a fork in the road if you get wot I mean and i'm keen to hear about the experiences of others whilst we make our decision.

Regards.
Cherisse

Hi Cherisse,

the 'crappy' weather elsewhere is one of the main reasons for Expats to move to Malta . It is quite 'crappy' here at the moment too but in general the weather is fine for most of the year.

I'm not aware of the situation for tattoo artists in Malta. I do know of several tattoo shops but I'm not sure if they are owner run or employ people.

Driving heavy vehicles would be in competition with Maltese drivers meaning that the salary could be low and there was a recent post about the precarious condition of heavy vehicles so that someone stopped driving after a few days. Something to keep in mind if going along that line.

Arriva bus drivers earn about 1200 € /month which might be an option.

If your friends can offer a good job you should go for it but 'may' be able to offer him something sounds a bit vague!

There are lots of posts on the cost of living in Malta so you should be able to get a good idea of what things cost here.

Cheers

Cheers for the info Ricky!

Any ideas what the admin work is like out there - or call centres?
Also been reading online about SmartCity Malta - any ideas what's happening there?

Thanks

ricky

Hi Cherisse,

admin work is usually reserved for the Maltese and mostly requires speaking Maltese. I'm working with a NGO and attend many admin meetings - you have to force them to speak English and without Maltese you don't get that far!

Call centres? How many foreign languages do you speak ? Usually they ask for two - not counting English as just about everybody can speak English. The only call centre just with English is the HSBC bank but I think they are just downsizing.

Smart City? It is hardly accessible and more a marketing concern than a real business opportunity. It will probably end up as a real-estate ruin. A few Maltese businesses have opened an outlet there but nothing significant. No sign of the thousands of jobs it is supposed to create.

Cheers

Lol, ok so back to the drawing board as far as I'm concerned - good thing I'm not fussy!!

Thanks for your help :)

Northway Brokers (of canadian origin) are in Sliemas Plaza and are a Payday Loan type company and they only deal with UK customers (says a lot doesnt it!!!!) they have their call centre here and offer good wages (by malti standards) and good conditions plus they tend to look after their staff both malti and english. so they may be worth a try.

Hi Cherisse,

don't get me wrong! There are jobs around for English speaking expats even in administrative positions. There are foreign finance companies , English language schools and many others.

It just might not be that easy to find the right job. Send out your cv to job agencies and check online job offers.

And be aware that Malta is a low-salary country for most jobs but there are better paid ones depending on specific qualification.

Cheers

You've been a great help, thanks Ricky.
I've signed up to the Muovo website and Reed.co.uk, I've seen a post in the work section listing a few more so I'll get on to them today :)
