Post new topic

I am interested in finding any expats in Ben Tre?  Please let me know if you're in the Ben Tre province.

Thank you

Hello nvrgvnin,

What is up?  What do you need ove there?  I don't live in Ben Tre.  But, I do pass through there quite often; I have some friends in that fishing village, Binh Dai.  Let me know.

Howie

Wanted to make some friends with western expats who are living there, for hang out time, if there are any.  I

Dang Howie, and you thought I lived in the sticks. Ben Tre? What in the world are you doing there? Any way welcome to the Delta Nvrgvin.

Wild_1

Nvrgvin,

Yeah, welcome to the Delta.  What is your name?  What are you doing over there?

Budman1,

I have a friend who buys a lot of coconuts in that area; and most of friends' families are in Binh Dai.  A lot of those fishermen fled to southern California when Saigon fell.  I get some of my best seafoods and dried-fish from them.

I have family outside of Ben Tre city, near the Rach Mieu bridge.  I am doing some research on natural farming and possibly some business opportunities.  Are there any expats in the center of Ben Tre?  A cousin's wife's family is from Binh Dai, went down there once.

Budman1

Howie,
Does he sell 700 of them coconuts everyday in Can Tho-:)

Nvrgvin,
Ther use to be any US Army guy (E-7) thats retired who lived in Ben Tre back in the very early 90's. Not sure where, but if he's still in town all the locals should know him.

Nvgvnin,

Family?  You sound like a Viet Kieu, no?  I know of a lot of Viet Kieus from Ben Tre.  There are a few of them retiring in Binh Dai.  But, I don't know if you want to hang with these guys:  they were former fishermen, went to the US and worked as auto mechanics...  typical lound-mouthed type?

Business opportunities?  What are you looking to do?  What are you main interests?

Howie

Budman1,

You and that Anatta guy are very funny, hey?  Are you guys looking to replace Jay Leno, or something?  Haaa!!!

My friend actually buys them by the boat loads, then sell them by the ship loads in China.

But hey, I am thinking about flying to Ha Noi this weekend.  Probably stay there for about a week.  Would you want me to check out those oven-selling firms for you?  But, you must consider the shippings and warranties...  If something happens, will it worth sending the thing back and forth?

Howie. That Anatta guy is helluva funny lad, isn’t he?

What is up, guys? A little bird told me that you were to teach some decent, proper kids to speak English. Man, one thing is you to speak your Southern California accent, but for a whole generation of Vietnamese kids to speak like surfer duds. What have they done to deserve this? Not enough with it, you ask them to pay you “tea money” as well (or coffee money. Whatever!!!). All I can say is to paraphrase the captain in the Top Gun movie when Tom Cruise character mentioned that he would teach at Top Gun school: ‘Good God. Have mercy’.

Budman1

Howie I'll send you an e-mail later this afternoon. I've got a feeling that as soon as the mods wake-up there's going to be  some heavy hitting of the delete button on this thread.

Anatta: ‘Good God. Have mercy’ Great line from a great movie.

Wild_1

Anatta, call sign "Funnyman,"

I see that you have spent too much of your time at the movies already.  I live in Huntington Beach, but no, I do NOT speak like those beach bums that you often see in movies, not too many of us do.  And "mercy"?  If I don't help these kids, they will bike to one of the tourist spots and try to pick English conversations with tourists, which is fine except in my area, most of the tourists are French or eastern Europeans.  What would you rather have, more of me or more of Arnold?

But, for me to be able to help them, I need to have a little public place.  I don't want to bring them into my home, "Funnyman".  That will be too inappropriate.

Budman. My favorite movie too.

Well, actually. I do know some French guys got a lot of chicks because, man, they love French accent. It has, how do you say, a ‘je ne sais quoi’ air to it. Heck, if I can get as many chicks as Arnold (minus his maid), I would love to talk like him as well.

Oh, I am sorry. You’re right. They don’t speak like surfer dudes in Huntington Beach. They only speak Spanglish there. :top:

I hope then the kids you teach look like Paz Vega as well.

Kidding aside, I think it is great and noble that you help them. They are very keen to learn, so good that you have time and willingness to spend time teaching them.

Get a local to help you. Maybe go to a language centre and ask one of the teachers to assist you.

Ben Tre is my wife's home town.  The only language center that I am aware of (as of 2015) is Trung tâm Ngoại ngữ Cambridge.  It is on the lake in the center of town at the corner of Hai Ba Trung and Ngugen Trung Truc.  They may not have any expat teachers but of course the Vietnamese staff should be able to give you some help and may try to recruit you.

You may find places on the river to be a little pricey, if you could even find any.  Generally speaking people in Ben Tre live in their own homes and the rental market may be pretty thin.

Does this mean 20 million VND?  If so I would keep looking.  The place may have commercial possibility if close to COOP and may be priced accordingly.  As you may have noticed the model is business or shop on the first floor, residence above.  What you probably really need is a small single story house.  You haven't mentioned if you have a motorbike, but have you looked on the other side of the river?  It seems rather quiet but pleasant over there.  Look for signs that say Nhà Cho Thuê.

You can find a nice house there for about 5-6 million
