The Capital Letter

Post new topic

BerlinBear

Hi all,

I actually registered my blog with Expat.coms a few months ago, but never got around to visiting the forum. However, I've now moved my blog and updated the listing, and since I was here I thought I'd poke my head around the corner and say hi.

I'm a New Zealander living in Germany. Until now I've been living in Berlin, but next week I'm sort of moving to Trier where I have a new job as a university lecturer. I say "sort of" because I'm keeping my flat here in Berlin, and my partner is staying here, so I'll be back in Berlin quite frequently.

My blog, The Capital Letter, is a mixture of current events, politics, news from home (NZ), and life in Germany. Whatever captures my interest on a given day really. I quite frequently do photo posts of various things in Berlin, and there will be more of these to come when I move to Trier.

I have pretty ecclectic interests, and I guess that is reflected in the scope and range of my blog. I've recently moved from tBlog to blogspot, because of server and support issues, so there are only a handful of posts on the new blog at this stage, but I've included links to the archives of my old blog if you're interested in trawling back through the arhives to see where I'm at and what I'm about.

Anyway, I hope that some of you will consider dropping by to have a read and say hi. I'm always interested to hear from new people, so don't be shy.

Greetings to all,
BerlinBear

Dear BerlinBear,

Welcome on the Expat.comgers' forum :)
You should add your blog address in profile>personal, this way we'll see your address in all your posts.

Why did you move from NZ to Germany? Isn't the move too difficult?

Take care,

Julien

Good tip Julien, thanks. I've done that now and played around with avatars and settings and stuff.

In answer to your question, I actually didn't move from NZ to Germany. I moved from the UK to Germany. But obviously before that I moved from NZ to the UK. Here's the short version: I moved to the UK to do a doctorate (doctorate is still ongoing!). I met my partner in the UK, an American who grew up in Germany. A year and a half ago we moved together to Berlin, which is where her family also lives. It's all a bit complicated and confusing with us. Can you imagine what it's like trying to sort out visas and work permits and so on? A nightmare. But anyway, we're very happy here now and will be staying for the short to medium term at least.

Cheers,
BB

Julien

Very nice bear :) do you know mine?

Your situtation is complicated, like for most members of this forum! You should have a look to this poll https://www.expat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=38

Yes it must be very complicated for your visas :/

Would you like to start a new topic about the European Day of Languages on the forum? (I think it's interesting for the https://www.expat.community)

Take care,

Julien

Righto. I also have a question for you about the resources section, so I'll find the relevant topic for that too.

Julien

I began to speak about the EDL here: https://www.expat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=155

The resources part of the website is very new, you might have to start a new topic to ask your question ;)

Hi BB,

You want to have a contest on the slowest PhD ever ? I'm your man ;)
I moved to Vietnam 5 years ago to do mine and geez, this thing will surely be the end of me...

What is your field ? And how was the research environment back in UK ?
(I'll avoid questions like : 'how's your research going' ? Or 'when will you finish' ? These can trigger a killing spree...)

You probably know the 'Piled Higher and Deeper' Comic strip, right? So for any grad student, it's a must read : http://www.phdcomics.com/

Take care,
